At IU, how do I set up a SAV server so that my departmental workstations can update virus definitions automatically?

To set up client computers to update Symantec/Norton AntiVirus (SAV/NAV) virus definitions locally, you need to install and set up a SAV server:

Install Symantec System Center

  1. Using IUware Online, from the Software for LSPs link, download the latest Symantec AntiVirus Enterprise Edition Server software. You can access IUware Online at: http://iuware.indiana.edu/
  2. Open the folder to which you downloaded the Setup.exe file and double-click it to transfer the installation files to the computer.

  3. Open the folder where the installation files were transferred. Double-click the Setup.exe file, and then select Install Administrator Tools.

  4. Select Install Symantec System Center, click Next, and then click Yes.

  5. Accept the license agreement and then click Next.

  6. Uncheck Alert Management System and click Next.

  7. To select the default installation location, click Next, and then click Install.

  8. Once the installation is complete, click Finish. Restart your computer if prompted to do so.

Install SAV Server

  1. Open the folder where the installation files were transferred. Double-click the Setup.exe file, and then select Install Administrator Tools.

  2. Select Install Symantec AntiVirus, and then Deploy Antivirus Server.

  3. Select Install, and then click Next.

  4. Select I Agree, and then click Next.

  5. Uncheck Alert Management System, and then click Next.

  6. Highlight the server where you want to install SAV, click Add, and then click Next.

  7. Click Next to select the default destination folder. If you are creating a new group:

    1. Enter a descriptive name (e.g., BL-UITS-SAV), and click Next.
    2. Set a password.

If you have an existing group:

    1. Select your group from the list and click Next.
    2. Enter your group password and click OK.
    3. Select the defaults.

  8. Select Automatic startup. Click Next, and then click Next again.

  9. Click Finish. SAV will then install. This will take a few minutes.

  10. Click Close to finish the setup process, and then click Exit.

  11. If you are prompted about old virus definitions, click Close.

Schedule updates

  1. Set the default download setting for your antivirus patterns by clicking Start and selecting Programs, then Symantec System Center, and then Symantec System Center Console. (This path may vary depending upon your Windows version.)

  2. Expand Symantec System Center, and then expand System Hierarchy.

  3. Right-click your group and select Unlock Server Group.

  4. Enter your password. If you would like to change your password:

    1. Right-click your server group and select Configure Server Group Password... .
    2. Enter your old password, your new password, and then your new password again to verify the change.

  5. If this is the first server in the group, right-click the server and select Make Server a Primary Server.

  6. Right-click your server group and select All Tasks, and then Symantec AntiVirus.

  7. Select Virus Definition Manager, and click Configure.

  8. Check Schedule for automatic updates, and then choose how often you would like the server to download virus definitions.

  9. Click OK twice. Save your console configuration and close it.

  10. To secure your server, see In SAV Server, how do I prevent unauthorized users from connecting to download virus definitions?

Install SAV/NAV on client computers

  1. From the client computer, connect to your server by clicking Start, and then selecting Run... .

  2. In the "Open:" field, enter: \\servername\VPHOME\CLT-INST\WINxx

Replace servername with the name of the server where you installed SAV. Replace xx with either 32 or 16 , depending on whether you are using a 32-bit or 16-bit operating system.

  3. Run Setup.exe to install SAV/NAV on the client computer.
