At IU, how do I set up a SAV server so that my departmental workstations can update virus definitions automatically?
Note: The following information is intended for
registered local support providers (LSPs) at Indiana
University. If you are an LSP and have questions regarding the

To set up client computers to update Symantec/Norton AntiVirus (SAV/NAV) virus definitions locally, you need to install and set up a SAV server:
Install Symantec System Center
- Using IUware Online, from the
Software for LSPslink, download the latest Symantec AntiVirus Enterprise Edition Server software. You can access IUware Online at: http://iuware.indiana.edu/ - Open the folder to which you downloaded the
Setup.exefile and double-click it to transfer the installation files to the computer.
- Open the folder where the installation files were
transferred. Double-click the
Setup.exefile, and then selectInstall Administrator Tools.
- Select
Install Symantec System Center, clickNext, and then clickYes.
- Accept the license agreement and then click
Next.
- Uncheck
Alert Management Systemand clickNext.
- To select the default installation location, click
Next, and then clickInstall.
- Once the installation is complete, click
Finish. Restart your computer if prompted to do so.
Install SAV Server
- Open the folder where the installation files were
transferred. Double-click the
Setup.exefile, and then selectInstall Administrator Tools.
- Select
Install Symantec AntiVirus, and thenDeploy Antivirus Server.
- Select
Install, and then clickNext.
- Select
I Agree, and then clickNext.
- Uncheck
Alert Management System, and then clickNext.
- Highlight the server where you want to install SAV, click
Add, and then clickNext.
- Click
Nextto select the default destination folder. If you are creating a new group:
- Enter a descriptive name (e.g.,
BL-UITS-SAV), and clickNext. - Set a password.
If you have an existing group:
- Select your group from the list and click
Next. - Enter your group password and click
OK. - Select the defaults.

- Select
Automatic startup. ClickNext, and then clickNextagain.
- Click
Finish. SAV will then install. This will take a few minutes.
- Click
Closeto finish the setup process, and then clickExit.
- If you are prompted about old virus definitions, click
Close.
Schedule updates
- Set the default download setting for your antivirus patterns by
clicking
Startand selectingPrograms, thenSymantec System Center, and thenSymantec System Center Console. (This path may vary depending upon your Windows version.)
- Expand
Symantec System Center, and then expandSystem Hierarchy.
- Right-click your group and select
Unlock Server Group.
- Enter your password. If you would like to change your
password:
- Right-click your server group and select
Configure Server Group Password.... - Enter your old password, your new password, and then your new password again to verify the change.
- Right-click your server group and select
- If this is the first server in the group, right-click the server
and select
Make Server a Primary Server.
- Right-click your server group and select
All Tasks, and thenSymantec AntiVirus.
- Select
Virus Definition Manager, and clickConfigure.
- Check
Schedule for automatic updates, and then choose how often you would like the server to download virus definitions.
- Click
OKtwice. Save your console configuration and close it.

Install SAV/NAV on client computers
- From the client computer, connect to your server by clicking
Start, and then selectingRun....
- In the "Open:" field, enter:
\\servername\VPHOME\CLT-INST\WINxx
Replace
servernamewith the name of the server where you installed SAV. Replacexxwith either32or16, depending on whether you are using a 32-bit or 16-bit operating system. - Run
Setup.exeto install SAV/NAV on the client computer.
