In Microsoft Word for Mac OS X, how do I change straight quotes to smart quotes?
If you import a text file into Microsoft Word for Mac OS X, or start a document with the AutoCorrect feature turned off, both single and double quotation marks may appear straight, i.e., as typewriter-style quotation marks or inch marks. To change these straight quotes to typeset appearance (i.e., smart quotes):
- From the
Toolsmenu, selectAutoCorrect....
- In the
AutoCorrectwindow, click theAutoFormat As You Typetab.
- Make sure
"Straight quotation marks" with "smart quotation marks"is selected, and then clickOK.
- In Word 2011, form the
Editmenu, selectFindand then chooseReplace.... In Word 2008, from theEditmenu, selectReplace....
- In Word 2011, the Search sidebar will appear. In the "Search
Document" field, enter either the
'(single quotation mark) or"(double quotation mark) character. Then enter the same character in the "Replace With" field.
In Word 2008, theFind and Replacewindow will open. In the "Find what:" field, enter either the'(single quotation mark) or"(double quotation mark) character. Then enter the same character in the "Replace with:" field.
- Click
Replace Allto replace all instances of the straight quote with the equivalent smart quote.
