ARCHIVED: In Symantec Endpoint Protection and SAV/NAV Corporate Edition for Windows, how do I change the settings for dealing with a detected virus?

Note: The University Information Security Office (UISO) recommends that you run the latest version of Symantec virus protection software (available to IU students, faculty, and staff free of charge via IUware) for your operating system; See In Windows, how do I safely upgrade to the latest Symantec Endpoint or AntiVirus software? Be sure to upgrade safely, update your virus definitions daily, and scan your computer weekly. Check the software help for instructions.

Symantec Endpoint Protection

To change the response settings in Symantec Endpoint Protection:

  1. Open Symantec Endpoint, and on the left, click Change settings.

  2. Next to "Antivirus and AntiSpyware Protection", click Configure Settings. This opens a tabbed window displaying the areas you can configure (e.g., File System Auto-Protection, Internet Email Auto-Protection, and Outlook Auto-Protection).

  3. Select the appropriate tab, and then click Actions.

  4. Click the Macro Virus and Non-Macro Virus options, and in each of the "Action" fields, use the drop-down list to choose an option for responding to a virus. You may do the same for the "If action fails" fields.

  5. When you're finished, click OK.

SAV/NAV Corporate Edition

To change the response settings in SAV/NAV:

  1. From the Start menu, select Programs or All Programs, then Symantec Client Security or Symantec/Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition, and then Symantec AntiVirus Client or Symantec/Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition.

Alternatively, in the notification area of the Taskbar (typically on the lower right of your screen), right-click the Symantec/Norton AntiVirus icon (a shield) and select Open Symantec/Norton AntiVirus... .

  2. In SAV/NAV CE, on the left, click the + (plus sign) next to the Configure folder to expand it.

Note: In Windows XP, you will see this option only if you have administrative rights.

The menu will expand to display the areas you can configure (e.g., File System Realtime Protection and Microsoft Exchange Realtime Protection).

  3. Select an area to configure, and then click Actions.

  4. On both the Macro Virus and Non-Macro Virus tabs, in the "Action" field, use the drop-down list to choose an option for responding to a virus. You may do the same for the "If action fails" fields.

  5. When you're finished, click OK.
