What software is available at IU for managing bibliographic references?
At Indiana University, students, faculty, and staff have access to EndNote and Reference Manager for bibliographic citation management. See At IU, how can I get EndNote and Reference Manager?
Citation management software helps you manage bibliographic references while writing a paper. Typically, you can input or import bibliographic information for sources, such as books and journal articles. Some electronic databases allow you to mark, download, or email records, and then transfer the records to the bibliographic management software.
The software will take the references and automatically format them in accordance with the style guidelines you choose (e.g., MLA, APA). Each program has its own range of available styles for formatting references. You can incorporate the formatted references into your paper, and then sort and search your references, detect and remove duplicates, and perform other tasks.
EndNote
EndNote is produced by Thomson ISI ResearchSoft (affiliated with the Institute for Scientific Information, which publishes the Web of Knowledge). EndNote allows you to format your references in a variety of styles, and is available for Windows, Mac OS 9, and Mac OS X. For more, see the EndNote web site or the IU Libraries EndNote page.
To avoid incompatibility issues with EndNote 8 and Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), upgrade to a later version of EndNote. You can download a current version from IUware Online at:

Reference Manager, also from Thomson ISI ResearchSoft, offers a set of three tools for researchers, allowing you to search online sources, create bibliographies, and manage reference databases. It is only available for Windows. See the Reference Manager web site.
