In Internet Explorer for Windows, what can I do if the buttons and toolbars are missing?
On this page:
Internet Explorer 7.0
Internet Explorer 7.0 features a slightly different user interface
from earlier versions, though it still offers a Full Screen view that
you can turn on and off using the F11 key. While
operating in Full Screen view, bring the mouse cursor to the top of
the screen and your entire set of toolbars will appear.
If the toolbars don't display, they may be hidden. To check the
status of your toolbars, click the Tools button and then,
from the submenu, select the Toolbars option.
The menu bar is hidden by default in Internet Explorer 7.0. To display it,
press the Alt key.
Note: You cannot choose to hide or unhide the Address Bar in Internet Explorer 7.0 as you could in previous versions.
Internet Explorer 6.0
Internet Explorer 6.0 for Windows has a view called Full Screen
that may cause the Address Bar, Button Bar, and drop-down menu to
disappear. To tell if you're in this mode, bring your mouse cursor to
the top of the screen; a smaller toolbar with icons representing the
Back, Forward, Stop, and Refresh
buttons will appear. To switch out of Full Screen mode, press the
F11 key on your keyboard.
If this doesn't display the buttons, from the View menu,
select Toolbars. The default items checked when Internet
Explorer is installed are:
- Standard Buttons: Has the basic buttons to navigate on the Internet
- Address Bar: Displays the address of the web page you are viewing, for example "http://www.indiana.edu/
- Links: Use for shortcuts to pages you visit often
You can customize the Standard Buttons and Links
toolbars. For more information, from the Help menu, choose
Contents and Index. Click the Search tab and enter
Change appearance of the Windows toolbar .
For more information about toolbars, from the Help menu,
choose Tour.
Kiosk mode (either version)
If none of the above suggestions work, you are most likely in Kiosk
mode; if so, you won't see the small toolbar when you move your mouse
cursor to the top of the screen. Some computers are set up to launch
Internet Explorer 6 or 7 only in Kiosk mode. Publicly accessible
computers, such as those found in public libraries, are a good example
of this. In those cases, the average user may not have the
administrative privileges to undo or prevent Internet Explorer from
launching in Kiosk mode. In this case, the only way to close Internet
Explorer is to press Alt-F4.
