In IU Webmail, how do I navigate through my messages?

When you log into IU Webmail, by default you begin in your Inbox folder. From there, you can navigate through your new messages.

The Inbox view

  • The leftmost column contains a checkbox for each message. You can use this checkbox to select messages to delete or move. To delete selected messages, click Delete near the top left of the message frame. To move or copy selected messages to a folder, click Move or Copy near the top right of the message frame.

  • The column labeled "#" indicates the number of each individual message, letting you see how many messages you have.

  • The "Date" field indicates the date you received the message.

  • The "From" field indicates the sender.

  • The "Subject" field contains the text of the "Subject" header of the message. Click the underlined text in this field to open the message.

  • The "Size" field indicates the size of the message.

Note: You can sort your messages using the "#", "Date", "From", "Subject", or "Size" field; see In IU Webmail, how can I sort the messages in a folder?

Working with messages

You can manipulate a message after opening it. To open a message, click the underlined text in the "From" or "Subject" column for the message, and follow the appropriate directions below:

  • To reply to the sender of the message only, click Reply. This will take you to a page in which you can compose your reply, and add addresses in the "Cc:" field. When you've done so, click Send Message.

  • To reply to the sender and anyone who was copied on the original message, click Reply to All. This will take you to a page in which you can compose your reply. When you've done so, click Send Message.

  • To forward the message, click Forward. This will take you to a page in which you can prepare your message. Enter the forwarding address in the "To:" field, and any addresses you wish to copy the message to in the "Cc:" field. When you're ready to send the message, click Send Message.

Note: If you are forwarding a message to multiple recipients, use commas to delimit the addresses, in either the "To:" or "Cc:" field; for example: jdoe@indiana.edu, efudd@looneytunes.com, dvader@empire.gov
  • You can also delete messages from the page in which they open. To do so, click Delete. This will mark the message for deletion. To purge your deleted messages forever, at the top right of the screen, click Purge Deleted.

  • To see detailed information about where the message came from, click Message Source. This will open a new window containing the full headers and any HTML code.

  • You can also move backward and forward in your messages from this page using the arrows near the top right of the message frame.
