At IU, how do I create user accounts for my department in Active Directory?
Note: The following information is intended for
registered local support providers (LSPs) at Indiana
University. If you are an LSP and have questions regarding the
information in this document, contact IT Professional Services and
Support at itps@iu.edu ; otherwise, contact
your campus Support Center.
All students, faculty, and staff on all eight Indiana University campuses are eligible for ADS domain accounts. User accounts are unique for all 130,000 users across all campuses and are created by the account generation system managed by UITS Accounts Administration. No one may create user accounts in ADS using the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in or any other tool or script other than the Account Management Service (AMS).
Procedures for creating accounts through the account generation process are as follows:
-
Individual accounts: If you previously had an IU
Bloomington or IUPUI NT domain account, you already have an
ADS domain account. For various reasons,
the passphrase for your ADS domain account should be the same as the
passphrase you used for your IUB or IUPUI NT domain account. To reset
your passphrase, use the Passphrase Maintenance utility at:
https://passphrase.iu.edu/
To see information on your accounts (Network ID required), visit: https://itaccounts.iu.edu/
Most new students, faculty, and staff at IU automatically receive an ADS domain account when their first computing accounts are created.
- Sponsored and departmental accounts: For instructions about requesting departmental accounts, see At IU, how can my group or department request a computing account?
All user accounts need to be managed centrally to comply with the goals of the IU Enterprise Directory Service (EDS). Consequently, any ADS domain user account created outside this process may be deleted or disabled without notice. For more, see At IU, what is the Account Management Service?
