At IU, why can't I set up a Windows domain controller for my department in Active Directory?

Note: The following information is intended for registered local support providers (LSPs) at Indiana University. If you are an LSP and have questions regarding the information in this document, contact LSP Services at  lsps@iu.edu ; otherwise, contact your campus Support Center.

Foreign Windows domains, forests, and trees (those set up outside of the Indiana University ADS domain) will not be trusted by the IU ADS forest. IU schools, departments, and affiliated units should not install, upgrade to, or participate in a foreign Windows domain, since this may result in interruption of services for IU students, faculty, and staff. In addition, Windows services (e.g., DHCP, DNS, Kerberos, WINS) may cause service interruptions for other departments, and may result in temporary disconnection of network services for the foreign domain.

For detailed information concerning ADS policies, see What are the ADS service policies at IU?
