ARCHIVED: In Windows, how do I access the CFS?

Note: UITS has retired CFS. A new file storage service for researchers became available in a public test phase in fall 2005; for more information, see At IU, what is the Research File System (RFS)? Also, the AFS cell ovpit@indiana.edu is being decommissioned. It will be replaced by the OpenAFS cell IU.EDU.

To access your CFS space, you must have a connection established to the Internet, such as a network connection on campus (for example, via Ethernet in campus housing or an office), a dial-up connection to an Indiana University modem pool, or a connection through any Internet service provider (ISP).

Note: For Windows 2000 and XP, from IUware Online, a CFS connection utility is offered that automatically connects your computer to your CFS account. From IUware Online, in the left-hand menu, select IU Utilities, and then click CFS Login Utilities. Click either CFS Login 4.0 for Bloomington or CFS Login 4.0 for IUPUI, depending on your campus. To download this utility, click Login. You will then be prompted for your IU Network ID username and password.

There are three ways through which you can access the CFS in Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000, or XP:

  • The World Wide Web, which works for whatever kind of Internet connection you have.

  • A mapped drive, which will not work if you are connecting through an outside ISP, unless you configure your computer to use VPN. For more information on using VPN, see the Knowledge Base document The basics of VPN at IU.

  • Secure FTP, for information about using secure FTP to access the CFS, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: At IU, can I use FTP to access my CFS space?

Access via the web

You can access CFSWeb, the web interface to the CFS, through any type of Internet connection (a network connection on campus, an IU modem pool, or an ISP outside of IU). UITS recommends this method if you are traveling or otherwise outside of IU. You will need to have a current web browser that supports secure connections through the SSL protocol. In your browser, go to: http://cfs.iu.edu/username Replace username with your username.

Once you enter this address, you will be prompted to enter your username and password. You will need to enter your ADS Domain username and password.

For more information about using CFSWeb, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: At IU, what is CFSWeb, and how do I use it?

Mapping a drive

You can access your CFS space by mapping a drive to your CFS space from your computer. You can do this from a networked computer on campus, through a dial-up connection to an IU modem pool, or through an outside ISP when your computer is configured to use the VPN.

Note: You must be logged into your computer using your ADS Domain username and password. If you do not enter your username and password when entering Windows, you will not be able to access your CFS space via the drive mapping method.

Mapping a drive to your CFS space in Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, or XP

To map a drive to your CFS space on a computer running Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, or XP, perform the following steps:

  1. Right-click the My Computer icon, then select Map Network Drive... .

  2. In the "Drive:" field, select the letter you would like to assign to the drive. That letter will become the mapped drive.

  3. In the "Path:" or "Folder:" field, type the pathname for the CFS space: \\cfs.iu.edu\username Replace username with your username.

  4. Click OK or Finish.

Note: UITS recommends that you use a current version of Windows on computers connected to the Indiana University network; see Recommended Windows operating systems at IU.

Mapping a drive to your CFS space in Windows NT 4.0

If you want to map a drive to your CFS space in Windows NT 4.0, you first need to ensure that Enable DNS for Windows Resolution is enabled. This option appears on the WINS Address tab under the properties for the TCP/IP protocol. To confirm that this is selected, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start and select Settings, then Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the Network icon, and then click the Protocols tab.

  3. Click TCP/IP Protocol, and then click Properties.

  4. Click the WINS Address tab. Make sure that the Enable DNS for Windows Resolution checkbox is checked.

  5. Click OK, then Close. If you are prompted to restart, do so.

Once you have confirmed that Enable DNS for Windows Resolution is checked, follow these steps to map a drive to the CFS space:

  1. Right-click the My Computer icon, then select Map Network Drive... .

  2. In the "Drive:" field, select the letter you would like to assign to the drive. That letter will become the mapped drive.

  3. In the "Path:" field, type the pathname for the CFS space: \\cfs.iu.edu\username Replace username with your username.

  4. Click OK.

Note: The UITS services in this document may not be available to users on the Fort Wayne campus. Many computing services at IPFW are administered locally by IPFW Information Technology Services (ITS).
