ARCHIVED: How can I access shared files in another user's CFS space?
Note: UITS has retired CFS. A
new file storage service for researchers became available in a public
test phase in fall 2005; for more information, see At IU, what is the Research File System (RFS)?
Also, the AFS cell ovpit@indiana.edu is being
decommissioned. It will be replaced by the OpenAFS cell
IU.EDU.
At Indiana University, you can access shared files in another user's CFS space if the other user has set up permissions for you to access the files. Follow these steps:
- Connect to the shared CFS space, using one of the following methods:
- In Windows, map a drive to
\\cfs.iu.edu\share. For information on how to do this, see the Knowledge Base document In Microsoft Windows, how do I map a drive?
Note: You must be connected to IU's network in order to map a drive to your CFS account. If you are connecting from an outside ISP, you must set up a VPN connection in order to do this. cfs.iu.eduand choose theSHAREAppleShare volume. For more information, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: In Mac OS or Mac OS X, how do I access the CFS? - In Windows or Mac OS, use CFSWeb. In a web browser, visit: http://cfs.iu.edu/share/

- To access the correct CFS space, descend the CFS tree by clicking
in succession the first two letters of the appropriate username. For
example, to access the CFS space of
myuser, first clickmand then clicky, and then locate and clickmyuserin the list of other possible usernames beginning with "my".
- You will see a directory listing all the folders in the user's CFS
space, but you won't be able to read anything except the folder
share, which you have been given permission to access. Clickshareto see and read the files or subfolders inside.
