ARCHIVED: How can I access shared files in another user's CFS space?

Note: UITS has retired CFS. A new file storage service for researchers became available in a public test phase in fall 2005; for more information, see At IU, what is the Research File System (RFS)? Also, the AFS cell ovpit@indiana.edu is being decommissioned. It will be replaced by the OpenAFS cell IU.EDU.

At Indiana University, you can access shared files in another user's CFS space if the other user has set up permissions for you to access the files. Follow these steps:

  1. Connect to the shared CFS space, using one of the following methods:

This connects you to the top-level view of the CFS, where you should see the directories a through z.

  2. To access the correct CFS space, descend the CFS tree by clicking in succession the first two letters of the appropriate username. For example, to access the CFS space of myuser, first click m and then click y, and then locate and click myuser in the list of other possible usernames beginning with "my".

  3. You will see a directory listing all the folders in the user's CFS space, but you won't be able to read anything except the folder share, which you have been given permission to access. Click share to see and read the files or subfolders inside.
