ARCHIVED: In Mac OS at IUB, how do I make a VPN connection to the IU wireless network?
Note: This document does not pertain to Mac OS X. For Mac OS X instructions, see the Knowledge Base document In Mac OS X, how do I make an IPsec VPN connection to the IU network?
In Mac OS, to use the wireless network at Indiana University Bloomington, you must first authenticate to the virtual private network (VPN) server. This requires NTS TunnelBuilder, a commercial product for VPN. This software is available on CD from the Computer Connection for $30. When you ask for the CD, specify that you need to use VPN for Mac OS 9 and earlier. There is another VPN CD that costs just $5, but it doesn't have the TunnelBuilder software.
To install and configure TunnelBuilder, put the CD in your computer, then follow these instructions:
Note: The following instructions assume you have an AirPort card to connect to the wireless network.
- From the CD, double-click
TunnelBuilder IUB Installer, and in the dialog box that appears, clickContinue....
- Read the license agreement, then click
Accept.
- In the
TunnelBuilder IUB Installerwindow, clickInstall. The installer will put the TunnelBuilder software on your computer. When it is finished, click theRestartbutton.
- Once your computer has finished restarting, the Wireless
Configuration Assistant will appear. Click
Proceed. When the Assistant finishes configuring your software, clickOK.
- From the Apple menu, choose
Control Panels, then selectLAN TunnelBuilder Settings.
- In the
LAN TunnelBuilder (IUB-Wireless-VPN)window, next to "VPN Username:" and "VPN Password:", enter your IU ADS username and password.
- From the
Filemenu, selectSave Configuration.
Once you have configured TunnelBuilder, to connect to the wireless
network, open the LAN TunnelBuilder control panel and
click Connect.
If you have difficulties accessing the wireless network, do the following:
- Make sure that you are in range of a wireless access point and your
AirPort card is turned on. To do this, open AirPort, usually
available from the Apple menu, and make sure your AirPort card is
turned on, you have a signal, and next to "Choose network:", you've
chosen the IU network (usually
IU Wireless).
- Reset your password. You can do this by using the Password
Maintenance utility, available at:
https://password.iu.edu/
If, when you change your password, "IU Active Directory" doesn't
appear, you may need to request an ADS Domain account. For
information about how to do this, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: At IU, how do I create an ADS Domain account?
- Make sure your TCP/IP control panel is using the right
configuration. When you install TunnelBuilder, the Wireless
Configuration Assistant creates a new TCP/IP configuration called
TunnelBuilder. If you have additional configurations, such as for
connecting to the modem pools or campus
Ethernet, make sure when you connect to the wireless
network that the TunnelBuilder configuration is active. To do this,
open the
TCP/IPcontrol panel, then from theFilemenu, chooseConfigurations.... From this window, clickTunnelBuilder, thenMake Active.
- Make sure your operating system and AirPort software are up to date. The LAN TunnelBuilder installer was designed for Mac OS 9 or later and AirPort version 1.3.1 or later.
