ARCHIVED: In Mac OS 9.x and earlier, how do I connect to the IUB or IUPUI VPN server?

Note: For instructions on making a VPN connection in Mac OS X, see the Knowledge Base document In Mac OS X, how do I make an IPsec VPN connection to the IU network?

Note: If you are a student, faculty member, or staff member at Indiana University Bloomington or IUPUI, use the IU Secure network for wireless access. For help, see What is IU Secure? If you are visiting IU, instead see Network Access accounts (guest wireless access) at IUB and IUPUI.

To access the Indiana University Bloomington or IUPUI virtual private network (VPN) servers in Mac OS, either wirelessly or remotely, you must purchase and install NTS TunnelBuilder, which is a commercial program that is available on CD at IUB from the Computer Connection or at IUPUI from the IUPUI Bookstore for $30.

To install and configure TunnelBuilder, insert the CD, and then follow these instructions:

Note: The following instructions assume you are connecting with a wired broadband connection (e.g., Ethernet, cable modem, DSL) or wirelessly via your AirPort card.

  1. On the CD, double-click the installer icon appropriate for your campus, and in the dialog box that appears, click Continue... .

  2. Read the license agreement, and then click Accept.

  3. In the installer window, click Install. The installer will put the TunnelBuilder software on your computer. When it is finished, click the Restart button.

  4. Once your computer has finished restarting, the Wireless Configuration Assistant will appear. Click Proceed. When the Assistant has completed configuring your software, click OK.

  5. From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels, and then select LAN TunnelBuilder Settings.

  6. In the LAN TunnelBuilder window, you may have to change some of the settings, as follows:

    • From the pull-down menu next to "Connect via:", select your connection method. If you are using Ethernet, a cable modem, or DSL, select Ethernet built-in or the name of your Ethernet card. If you are connecting with your AirPort card, select AirPort.
    • By default, in the pull-down menu next to "Configure:", Using DHCP Server is selected. However, if you have a static IP address, select Manually. If you're not sure, leave Using DHCP Server selected.
    • If you are using DHCP, unless your Internet service provider (ISP) has specifically given you one, leave the "DHCP Client ID:" field blank. If you have a static IP address, type it in the "IP Address:" field.
    • Next to "Subnet Mask:", if you are using DHCP, use 0.0.0.0 . If you have a static IP address, type your subnet mask.
    • Next to "Router Address:", if you are using DHCP, use 0.0.0.0 . If you have a static IP address, type your router's address.
    • Next to "Name Server Address:", make sure the numbers are as follows: 129.79.1.1 for IUB and 134.68.1.9 for IUPUI.
    • In the pull-down menu next to "VPN Protocol:", select PPTP.
    • Next to "VPN Username:" and "VPN Password:", enter your IU Network ID username and passphrase.
    • Next to "VPN Server Address:", type the name of the VPN server. There will probably be a different address already in this field, but it is for an older server.

Use the table below to find your VPN server for both remote (e.g., cable modem, DSL, or outside Internet service provider) and wireless VPN connections:

      Campus VPN server

      IU Bloomington iub-remote-vpn.indiana.edu
      IU East vpn.iue.edu
      IU Kokomo vpn.iuk.edu
      IU Northwest 149.162.8.2
      IUPUI vpn.iupui.edu
      IU South Bend vpn.iusb.edu
      IU Southeast vpn.ius.edu

    • In the pull-down menu next to "Encryption:", select MPPE.

  7. From the File menu, select Save Configuration.

Once you have configured TunnelBuilder, to connect to the VPN server, open the LAN TunnelBuilder control panel and click Connect.

If you have difficulties accessing the VPN server, try the following:

  • Reset your passphrase. You can do this by using the Passphrase Maintenance utility, available at: https://passphrase.iu.edu/

If, when you change your passphrase, "IU Active Directory" doesn't appear, you may need to request an ADS Domain account. For information about how to do this, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: At IU, how do I create an ADS Domain account?

  • If you are connecting to the campus wireless network, make sure that you are in range of a wireless access point and your AirPort card is turned on. To do this, open AirPort, usually available from the Apple menu, and make sure your AirPort card is turned on, you have a signal, and next to "Choose network:", you've chosen the IU network (usually IU Wireless).

For a list of wireless access points at IUB and IUPUI, visit:

    http://www.indiana.edu/~uits/telecom/data/waps.html
  • Especially if you are connecting from an internal network, you may need to use the IP addresses rather than the domain names of the VPN servers. Instead of using vpn.indiana.edu , try 156.56.245.6 , 156.56.245.7 , 156.56.245.13 , or 156.56.245.3 . Instead of vpn.iupui.edu , try 134.68.220.182 .

  • Make sure your TCP/IP control panel is using the right configuration. When you install TunnelBuilder, the Wireless Configuration Assistant creates a new TCP/IP configuration called TunnelBuilder. If you have additional configurations, such as for connecting to your ISP without VPN, make sure when you connect to the VPN server that the TunnelBuilder configuration is active. To do this, open the TCP/IP control panel, and then from the File menu, choose Configurations... . From this window, click TunnelBuilder, then Make Active.

  • If you are connecting via AirPort, make sure your operating system and AirPort software are up to date. The LAN TunnelBuilder installer was designed for Mac OS 9 or later and AirPort version 1.3.1 or later.
