ARCHIVED: In SAV/NAV CE, how do I change modes in order to enable Automated Virus Definitions?

Note: The following information is intended for registered local support providers (LSPs) at Indiana University. If you are an LSP and have questions regarding the information in this document, contact LSP Services at  lsps@iu.edu ; otherwise, contact your campus Support Center.

Note: Macintosh versions of NAV cannot take advantage of this service.

You can install Symantec/Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition (SAV/NAV CE) in either unmanaged or managed mode. Managed mode allows SAV/NAV CE to be controlled by a SAV/NAV Enterprise server, which will update virus definitions automatically. If you are running any version of SAV/NAV other than CE (e.g., SAV/NAV 2000 or 2002), you cannot use managed mode. Should you wish to install SAV/NAV CE (which UITS recommends), be sure to see Information about uninstalling Symantec/Norton AntiVirus in Windows. Also, if you have trouble with the instructions in this document, you can simply uninstall and reinstall SAV/NAV CE in managed mode.

If you want to connect an unmanaged installation of SAV/NAV CE to a SAV/NAV Enterprise server (i.e., change to a managed installation), you can simply copy the file named Grc.dat from the server to your computer. To do so:

  1. From the Start menu, select Run... .

  2. Enter \\servername\VPHOME\ (where servername is the name of your Enterprise server). The Grc.dat file resides here. (If you are at the server, VPHOME points to \Program Files\NAV by default.) Then follow the appropriate directions below:

    • For SAV/NAV CE 7.5x, 7.6x, and 8.x, copy the Grc.dat file to the directory appropriate to your operating system:

      • In Windows 2000 or XP, the folder to which you must copy the Grc.dat file is hidden by default:

        1. To view it, in Windows Explorer or the My Computer window, select Tools, then Folder Options... .
        2. Under the View tab, select the option Show hidden files and folders.
        3. Copy the Grc.dat file to the \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirusCorporate Edition\ 7.x folder.

      • In Windows 95, 98, or NT, copy the Grc.dat file to the folder where SAV/NAV is installed. For Windows NT, the default folder is WINNT\Profiles\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition\ 7.x . For Windows 95 or 98, the default folder is C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus.

    • For SAV/NAV CE 7.0x, copy the Grc.dat file to the folder where SAV/NAV is installed on your computer. For Windows NT or 2000, the default folder is C:\Program Files\NavNT. For Windows 95 or 98, the default folder is C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus.

After a few minutes, SAV/NAV CE will find the Grc.dat file. SAV/NAV CE will make the appropriate changes to the registry and then delete the file. The next time your computer checks in with the parent server, Symantec System Center will display. You can force a check-in by starting and then stopping SAV/NAV, or by rebooting your computer.
