In SSH Secure Shell for Windows, how do I transfer files?

Opening the Secure File Transfer Client and connecting to a remote server

1. To use secure FTP (SFTP) to transfer files in SSH Secure Shell for Windows, you'll first need to open a file transfer window using one of these methods:
   
   
   • From the Start menu, select Programs, then SSH Secure Shell, and then Secure File Transfer Client.
   • From within SSH, from the Window menu, select New File Transfer.
   
   
2. From the File menu, select Connect... .
   
   
3. In the "Host Name:" field, type the name of the host to which you are connecting, for example, quarry.uits.indiana.edu . In the "User Name:" field, type your username on that host. Click Connect.
   
   
4. When you are prompted for a password, enter the appropriate password.

When the software connects to your host, you should see the directories on your local computer on the left side, and the directories on the remote host on the right.

Note: If a Secure Shell client window opens instead of a file transfer window, the host you are connecting to does not support secure FTP.

Moving a file from your computer to a server

1. From the Operation menu, select Upload... .
   
   
2. An Upload - Select Files window will open. Browse to the file you'd like to move.
   
   
3. Click the Upload button.

Moving a file from a server to your computer

1. Find the file or folder on the server you'd like to download, and click it to highlight it.
   
   
2. From the Operation menu, select Download... .
   
   
3. A Download - Select Folder window will open. Browse to the folder where you'd like to place a copy of this file.
   
   
4. Click the Download button.
