ARCHIVED: At IU, if I have a Steel, Nations, or da Vinci account, what do I need to know about secure FTP?

Note: Due to the decline in demand for Unix and Linux instruction at Indiana University Bloomington, effective at the end of spring 2007, no new Student Technology Center (STC) Unix accounts (i.e., Nations and da Vinci) will be created. For more information, see ARCHIVED: IUB STCs retiring Nations and da Vinci Unix labs. The functionality offered by these Unix clusters will continue to be available at the above locations, utilizing Windows and/or Macintosh STC workstations as well as other UITS resources.

At Indiana University, Steel, Nations, and da Vinci are not accessible by insecure FTP clients such as Hummingbird FTP, Transmit, or Fetch. To transfer files to or from these systems, you need to use an FTP client that supports secure FTP (SFTP). For more information about SFTP, see the Knowledge Base document What is SFTP, and how do I use it to transfer files? You can find information below about SFTP clients for Windows, Mac OS, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Mypage web pages on Steel

If you have a web page on Steel and transfer your HTML or other files from your computer to Steel, you need to use an SFTP client to transfer the files. You can find information below about downloading and using an SFTP client. If you are currently using a web authoring tool such as FrontPage that does not support SFTP, you will still be able to create your files using this tool, but you will need to use an SFTP client to transfer your files. For more information, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: At IU, using FrontPage, Dreamweaver, or Netscape Composer, how do I publish my web pages on Mypage or Webserve?

Note: The IU South Bend Mypage service is different from the Mypage service noted here; see IUSB's Web Publishing: Mypage.
