Using Microsoft Excel, how do I make a chart using one set of data as the X-axis?
Suppose you have the following data in Microsoft Excel:

| 5 | 2002 | 250 |
| 6 | 2003 | 300 |
| 7 | 2004 | 250 |

| 9 | 2006 | 150 |
| 10 | 2007 | 200 |
Column A is Year, and column B is Value. Suppose you want to make a chart with Year on the X-axis and Value on the Y-axis. Follow the steps below for your version of Excel to make a chart based on these data.
Excel 2010 and 2007
- Highlight cells A1 to B10.
- Click the
Inserttab on the Ribbon.
- In the "Charts" section, click the desired chart style and
substyle. The chart will appear on the screen.
- Under the "Chart Tools" heading,
Designshould already be selected. ClickSelect Datain the "Data" section of the Ribbon.
- Under "Legend Entries (Series)", select
Year, and then clickRemove.
- Under "Horizontal (Category) Axis Labels", click
Edit. Select cells A2 to A10, and then clickOK.
- Make sure the chart looks the way you want it to, and then click
OK.
Other versions of Excel
- Highlight cells A1 to B10.
- From the
Insertmenu, selectChart.
- Select the chart type and subtype. Click
Next.
- Click the
Seriestab.
- Under "Series", click
Year, and then clickRemove.
- In the "Category (X) axis labels" area, click
Selection.
- Highlight cells A2 to A10, and then press
Enter.
- Verify that the chart looks the way you want it to, and then click
Next.
- Fill in the chart's title and axis labels, and then click
Finish.
