In LISTSERV, what does it mean to be "served off" or "served out" of a list?

If a LISTSERV user sends 50 consecutive invalid commands to a LISTSERV server, LISTSERV automatically removes that user, and further commands are ignored. Access to the web interface for LISTSERV list management also becomes disabled for that user.

When a user is served off in this fashion, a list owner or another user can issue a SERVE net address command to restore the user's access. For example, if  darthvader@indiana.edu  were served off, the following command could be used to restore him:

SERVE darthvader@indiana.edu

However, the SERVE command will not restore service to users who have been served off by the list maintainer. If the list maintainer has served off a user, it will have to be the list maintainer who issues the SERVE command to restore service. To contact the list maintainer, see Where can I get help for LISTSERV?

For more information about LISTSERV, see L-Soft Documentation and Manuals.

Note: For Indiana University LISTSERV mailing lists, send all commands to the appropriate address for your campus:

  Campus Server address
  IU Bloomington listserv@indiana.edu
  IUPUI listserv@iupui.edu
  IU Kokomo listserv@iuk.edu
  IU Northwest listserv@iun.edu
  IU South Bend listserv@iusb.edu
  IU Southeast listserv@ius.edu

Never send commands to the address of the mailing list (e.g., to  listname@indiana.edu ). Send only messages intended for members of the list to the list's address.
