On my LISTSERV list, how do I limit the number of messages my list receives per day?

To limit the number of messages your LISTSERV list receives per day, modify the Daily-Threshold value in your list's header. To do this at Indiana University, use the LISTSERV web interface, or use email to send commands to the LISTSERV server as described below.

Using the IU LISTSERV web interface

To modify the Daily-Threshold value using the web interface for LISTSERV list management:

  1. For Indiana University LISTSERV lists, visit the menu for your campus:

Log in using your IU email address and LISTSERV password, and then from the List Management menu at the top, select List Dashboard. Under "List Name", click Configure under the name of the list you wish to edit. If you do not have a LISTSERV personal password, see In LISTSERV, how do I set or change a personal password?

  2. From the List Configuration page, select the Distribution tab.

  3. Use the text boxes to change the values for the Daily-Threshold keyword. Input values for the number of messages you want your list to receive per day or per sender.

  4. When you are finished, click Submit.

Using email commands

To modify the Daily-Threshold value using email commands:

  1. Retrieve the list header by sending the following command in the body (not subject) of a message addressed to the LISTSERV server: GET listname (HEADER

Replace listname with the name of your list.

Note: For Indiana University LISTSERV mailing lists, send all commands to the appropriate address for your campus:

      Campus Server address
      IU Bloomington listserv@indiana.edu
      IUPUI listserv@iupui.edu
      IU Kokomo listserv@iuk.edu
      IU Northwest listserv@iun.edu
      IU South Bend listserv@iusb.edu
      IU Southeast listserv@ius.edu

Never send commands to the address of the mailing list (e.g., to  listname@indiana.edu ). Send only messages intended for members of the list to the list's address.

  2. LISTSERV will send you an email message that contains your list's header information. Using a text editor, find "Daily-Threshold" and change its value to the number of messages you want your list to receive per day.

  3. To make your change take effect, include the following line along with the revised header information in the body (not the subject) of a mail message addressed to the LISTSERV server: PUT listname LIST PW=XXXXXXXX

Replace listname with the name of your list and XXXXXXXX with your LISTSERV password. (For more information about LISTSERV passwords, see In LISTSERV, how do I set or change a personal password?)

Note: As a convenience, LISTSERV automatically inserts the PUT command at the beginning of any file you retrieve with the GET command.

For more information about modifying your LISTSERV list header, see On my LISTSERV list, how can I modify the list header?
