In order to manage your BlackBerry Address Book, the easiest method is to edit your Outlook Contacts and then synchronize your handheld; see ARCHIVED: For mobile devices, what is synchronization? However, to edit your Address Book directly, you can use the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. Your changes will propagate to your Outlook Contacts the next time you sync.

Note: This method works only with BlackBerry Desktop Manager versions 3.6 and older.

To edit your BlackBerry Address Book using Desktop Manager:

  1. Turn off wireless address book synchronization, if necessary, as follows:
    1. On your BlackBerry handheld, open the Address Book screen and click the trackball.
    2. From the menu, choose Options, and then select Wireless Synchronization.
    3. Click the trackball and choose Change Option. Use the trackball to change the selected option from Yes to No.
  2. Cradle your device. If you have a password enabled, enter it so your device will connect to the desktop.

  3. Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager and double-click the Backup and Restore icon.
  4. Click Advanced.... In the Backup/Restore section, from the "Device Databases" field on the right, select Address Book, and then click the left arrow button to copy it to the "Desktop File Databases" field on the left.
  5. To open the Address Book for editing on your computer, double-click it in the "Desktop File Databases" field on the left.
  6. The Editing Address Book dialog box will open; here you can create, edit, and delete entries, or import from your Outlook Address Book or other personal information manager. Click Close when you are finished.

Until you transfer your Address Book to your BlackBerry, the changes you've made affect only your desktop Address Book. To transfer it to your BlackBerry, either click the right arrow, or restore it as part of a full restore; see ARCHIVED: With a BlackBerry, how do I back up and restore data?
