Good practices for teaching with technology: Respect diverse talents and ways of learning
Following are some examples of projects by AT&T Fellows Program recipients at Indiana University that illustrate the good practice of respecting diverse talents and ways of learning:
Online coursework for rapidly changing fields
This project by Elaine Cooney incorporates videos and slide shows within Oncourse to provide a modular overview of the assembly process for circuit boards. For more, see Cooney's Good Practices project page.
Comparing face-to-face and online instruction
Developed by Thomas Keefe, this is a systematic study comparing traditional instruction with online delivery of the same course content. For more, see Keefe's Good Practices project page.
Students offered choice of type of computer exercises for assignments
This course by John Kremer allows students to complete their choice from an offering of five very different online exercises as homework. The exercises include flow charts, matching exercises, application of course concepts, and essays; all but the essays offer immediate feedback. For more, see Kremer's Good Practices project page.
Supplementing lecture with musical examples and illustrative materials online
This project from Portia Maultsby involves the web sites "Hip-Hop Music and Culture", "Popular Music of Black America", and "A Survey of African-American Music". All three incorporate recordings with contextual background materials, including lecture notes, musical transcriptions, photographs, and graphics. For more, see Maultsby's Good Practices project page.
Providing multiple navigation pathways for online resources
This project from Jonathan A. Plucker created a web-based learning resource that allows students to access information on human intelligence in different ways. For more, see Plucker's Good Practices project page.
Web-based geriatrics modules for resident education
This project by Glenda R. Westmoreland provides a web site offering a modular introduction to geriatric issues. It includes streaming video clips of interviews and also demonstrates techniques for scoring standard questionnaires for common conditions. Each module incorporates a pretest to accommodate students with varying degrees of preparation. For more, see Westmoreland's Good Practices project page.
