With a BlackBerry at IU, how do I switch from desktop redirection to the BES Redirector service?
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) Redirector is a billed service offered by UITS to Indiana University faculty and staff. With a BES data plan you purchase from your cellular provider, the IU BES Redirector service enables full access to your IU Exchange email account (including mail, calendar, tasks, etc.) from your BlackBerry device. For more, see Getting started with a BlackBerry at IU.For instructions to activate your device on the IU BES Redirector and begin service, see At IU, how do I activate a new or replacement BlackBerry on the BES?
After making the switch, do not uncheck
Redirect incoming messages to your handheld in the Redirector
Settings application. For more, see With a BlackBerry at IU, why did I stop receiving email when I switched from desktop redirection to the BES Redirector service?
Note: If you run the BlackBerry Desktop
software on a computer connected to the Internet via an outside
ISP, you need to establish a VPN connection for
the software to connect to the BlackBerry Enterprise
Server. (This applies only to the Desktop Manager and
not the Blackberry Web Desktop Manager. No VPN
connection is needed for the Web Desktop Manager.) Since the default
software installation option places a shortcut in your
Startup folder, you may wish to remove that shortcut to
keep Desktop Manager from trying to launch before you can establish a
VPN connection (for instructions, see In Windows, how can I prevent a program from starting automatically?). Once you
have a VPN connection, you can launch the BlackBerry Desktop software
from the Start menu.
