Reading your Exchange email
You can read your Exchange email with most popular email clients. However, for full use of calendars, scheduling, and other features, use Outlook; other clients will vary in functionality.
For configuration instructions, click the appropriate link:
| Full-featured clients | ||
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Outlook 2010, 2007 | Allows use of all Exchange features. |
| Mac OS X | Allows use of most Exchange features, including calendars, address book, and scheduling. | |
| Web-based clients (Outlook Web App) | ||
| Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome | OWA | Allows use of most Exchange features. |
| IMAP clients | ||
| Windows | IMAP connections permit you to read your Exchange
email, but with few or no additional features. While this is not an
ideal solution if you wish to access these features, IMAP setup is
useful if all you need is email.
Note: Mac OS X (10.6 and later) does give access to a basic set of Exchange features through Mail, Address Book, and iCal; however, its implementation of Exchange is still limited with respect to the needs of advanced users. |

| Mac OS X | ||
| Linux | Mozilla Thunderbird | |
| Mobile clients | ||
| iOS | iPhone, iPad, iPod touch | Allows use of some Exchange features. |
| Android | Android | Allows use of some Exchange features. |
While UITS has tested the programs listed above and supports their use, other email clients may work as well. For general instructions, see If my email client is not covered in the Knowledge Base, how do I configure it to work with IU email systems?
Note: In Outlook 2003 or earlier, or with a connection to Indiana University via an outside Internet service provider (ISP) with handheld synchronization software, you must establish a VPN connection before connecting to your Exchange mailbox. See The basics of VPN at IU and At IU, using an outside ISP, why can't I connect to my Exchange account with Outlook or BlackBerry Desktop Manager?
