ARCHIVED: At IUB and IUPUI, how do I answer a call on my office telephone?

On this page:

All telephone models

To answer a call with the speakerphone (if available)

  1. Listen for ringing.

  2. Do not lift the handset. Press your telephone's Speakerphone or Handsfree button.

  3. Begin speaking into the microphone.

  4. To end the call, press your telephone's Speakerphone or Handsfree button again, or raise and immediately lower the handset.

Caller ID telephones

Calling Line Identification (Caller ID) information is sent from the telephone switch to your telephone between the first and second ring. Therefore, if you want to see the telephone number of the incoming call on the display and the Caller's List, you must wait until the information appears on the display before answering the telephone. If you have a two-line telephone and lift the handset or press Handsfree/Mute when both lines are ringing, the line that was ringing first is automatically answered. To change which line is answered first, see At IUB, on my two-line Caller ID telephone, how can I control which line I answer?

Meridian Business Set M5312 and M5316

When you lift the handset, the primary directory number (PDN) button is automatically selected. Your main telephone number is the PDN. A solid diamond will appear to the left of the button. If you would like to select a different line, press the button for the appropriate number.

To answer a non-PDN number on your set (MADN or Phantom)

  1. Lift the handset.

  2. Press the button beside the flashing diamond.

To answer a non-PDN number on your set with the Handsfree button

  1. Do not lift the handset. Press the button beside the desired flashing diamond.

  2. Press Handsfree.

  3. Begin speaking into the microphone.

To place one call on hold and answer a second call

  1. Ask the calling party to hold.

  2. Press the number button by the flashing diamond. This automatically places your original call on hold. The diamond indicator will flash.

  3. Press the original number button to reconnect to your original caller.
