In IUB campus housing, using Windows, how do I connect to my RTC's network printer?
Note: At Indiana University Bloomington, printing to a Residential Technology Center (RTC) printer counts against your Student Technology Center (STC) printing allotment. However, IUB campus housing residents receive an extra 100-page allotment per semester. This additional allotment is usually added mid-semester. For more, see About STC printing allotments at IUB.
UITS provides a printer utility for Windows 2000 and XP that will automatically install IUB STC and RTC printers; see How do I obtain and use the IU printer locator utility?
Alternatively, you can manually configure your Windows 2000, XP, or Vista computer to connect to your RTC printer. To do so, follow the steps below:
- From the
Startmenu, clickSettingsand thenPrinters and Faxes(Printersin Windows 2000).Note: The Windows XP default desktop view and
Startmenu are different from the Windows Classic View (e.g., in Windows 2000). Therefore, navigating to certain items can be different. In the interest of broad applicability, most Knowledge Base instructions assume you are using Classic View. For information about switching your Windows XP default view to Classic View, see In Windows XP, how do I switch to the Windows Classic View, Classic theme, or Classic Control Panel? - In Windows XP, click
Add a printer. In Windows 2000, double-clickAdd Printer. In the Add Printer Wizard that opens, clickNext>.
- Select the radio button that says
A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer(Windows XP) orNetwork printer(Windows 2000), and then clickNext>.
- Select the radio button that says
Connect to this printer (or to browse for a printer, select this option and click Next):(Windows XP) orType the printer name, or click Next to browse for a printer(Windows 2000). In all versions, enter the path to the RTC printer, as specified in What are the IUB RTC network printer paths and models?
- If you have your own printer or already have a printer configured,
you will be prompted to select this newly added printer as the default
printer, meaning all print jobs will automatically be sent to it. If
you only use the RTC network printer occasionally, select
No; if it will be your primary printer, selectYes. ClickNext>, thenFinish.
- You're now ready to print to the RTC network printer. Before you send a document to the printer, send a one-page test document (e.g., your name typed several times).
