Troubleshooting campus network connections in IUB or IUPUI campus housing using Windows

Note: Use Get Connected to register Windows 7, Vista, XP, and Mac OS X 10.5 and later computers to use the Indiana University network in campus housing. Computers running earlier versions of Mac OS, Linux computers, and game consoles must be manually registered. For help, contact your campus Support Center. You cannot register earlier versions of Windows on the IU network in campus housing.

If you're having problems connecting to the Indiana University Bloomington or IUPUI network with your Windows computer from your campus housing residence, check the following:

Physical connection

Network cable

  • IUPUI: In Ball Residence Hall and the Campus Apartments on the Riverwalk, you may use a commercial Ethernet cable.

  • Indiana University Bloomington: In Briscoe, Union Street Center, and the Tulip Tree apartments, you will need to provide your own standard cat6 Ethernet straight-through patch cord. In all other non-Greek campus housing, you will find an Ethernet crossover cable attached to the wall data jack.

IUB Greek housing residents may purchase an IU proprietary Ethernet cable; see At IUB, where can I purchase an Ethernet cable?

Data jack

If the room contains more than one data jack, try the other. All data jacks are active, but this can isolate the one with a problem.

Disable dial-up networking

If your computer keeps trying to dial the phone, disable dial-up networking:

Note: This is not an issue in Windows 7.

In Windows Vista, from the Start menu, click Control Panel. In the left menu, click Classic View, and then open Internet Options. Click the Connections tab, and then select Never dial a connection.

In Windows XP, from the desktop, open My Computer, and then Dial-Up Networking. From the Connections menu, choose Settings. Under "When establishing a network connection:", select Don't prompt to use Dial-Up Networking.

If you receive an error message, see the appropriate section below:

Error messages

No domain server

This error occurs when a Windows NT Domain server (ADS) attempts to validate your password in Microsoft Networking, but can't because the server either was not available or could not be found. If you receive this error:

In Windows 7:

  1. From the Start menu, click Control Panel.

  2. View either Large icons or Small icons, and then open Network and Sharing Center.

  3. Click Change adapter settings.

  4. Right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties.

  5. Verify that Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) is unchecked. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.

  6. Select Obtain an IP address automatically, and then click OK.

In Windows Vista:

  1. From the Start menu, click Control Panel. In the left menu, click Classic View.

  2. Open Network and Sharing Center, and then from the menu on the left, click Manage Network Connections.

  3. Right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties.

  4. Verify that Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) is unchecked. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.

  5. Select Obtain an IP address automatically, and then click OK.

In Windows XP:

  1. From the desktop, right-click My Network Places, and then select Properties.

  2. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties.

  3. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.

  4. Select the radio button next to Obtain an IP address automatically, and then click OK.

If this error persists, the network may be busy. Click Cancel and try logging in again.

Duplicate computer name

See In Windows, why do I get an error about a duplicate computer name?

Unable to browse the network

When you receive this error, your computer is unable to connect to the network, and therefore cannot send or receive data. Double-check the configuration settings and your network cable. If you have done this and the problem persists, contact your campus Support Center.

DHCP error

This error occurs when your Windows XP computer cannot communicate with the DHCP server, which is necessary for leasing an IP address to your computer. If you encounter this error, it might be that your computer cannot pick up the IP address automatically. To fix this:

  1. From the Start menu, select Run... .

  2. In the "Open:" field, type cmd and click OK.

  3. At the command prompt, enter ipconfig/all . Press Enter. A list of networking information will appear.

  4. When you see the IP address information, if you see a "169.x.x.x" number for your IP address, restart your computer through the Start menu.

After restarting, if you still see this error, contact your campus Support Center.

The IU Secure wireless network is available in all IU Bloomington and IUPUI dormitory residence halls, as well as Campus View and Hillcrest Apartments. If IU Secure is not yet available in your campus residence, you may operate a properly configured, FCC-approved wireless access point (WAP) as an exception to the IT-19 Extending the University Data Network and IT-20 Wireless Networking policies from the University Information Policy Office (UIPO). Once IU Secure is available in your residence, this exception will no longer apply and you will need to remove your WAP from the network. For details, see At IUB, if my campus residence does not yet have IU Secure wireless network access, how do I configure a wireless access point?
