In IU Webmail, what are identities, and how do I create and use them?

In IU Webmail, you can create one or more identities to use when you send mail from your Indiana University account. For each identity, you can specify your name and reply-to address, and set certain preferences such as where sent mail should be stored.

To create a new identity or edit an existing identity in Webmail:

  1. In Webmail, from the header bar at the top of the screen, click Options.

  2. Under "General Options", click Personal Information.

  3. From the drop-down menu under "Select the identity you want to change:", leave Create a new one selected to create an identity, or select the identity you wish to edit.

  4. Complete the fields as follows:

    • Under "Identity's name:", give your identity a name. Use something descriptive, such as Work, Family, or a nickname.

    • Under "Your full name:", enter your name as you would like it to appear in the "From:" field of messages you send.

    • If you are affiliated with multiple IU campuses, in the menu under "From Address:", select the IU email address you want to appear in the "From:" field of messages you send.

    • If you would like replies to your messages to be sent to a different account, under "Your Reply-to: address:", you can enter an email address other than your IU address. If you leave this blank, the reply-to address will automatically be set to your IU email address.

    • Under "Sent mail folder:", you can select the folder where copies of mail you send will be saved. By default, None appears in the drop-down list; UITS recommends that you select Use Default Value, or Create a new sent mail folder.

Note: If you choose to save mail in a folder other than the default value or the sent-mail folder, other mail programs that you may use to access your account may not recognize the folder as a proper sent mail folder. This could result in multiple folders being used to store sent mail, some of which may not be accessible to you from other mail clients.

  5. When you have made all your desired changes, click Save Options.

You can choose an identity to be the default for messages you compose. To do so, from the header bar at the top of the screen in Webmail, click Options. Under "General Options", click Personal Information. From the drop-down menu under "Your default identity:", select the identity you wish to have Webmail use automatically. Click Save Options to save the change.

While you are composing a message, you can switch to a different identity by selecting it from the drop-down menu next to "Identity".
