At IU, with a Windows Mobile or Pocket PC device, why can't I browse the web using Pocket Internet Explorer?
Due to a design flaw, Pocket Internet Explorer will not work with
VPN connections when trying to view web pages. The problem
is that Pocket Internet Explorer will only use the VPN connection when
making HTTP requests within the VPN server's own
domain, which at Indiana University is
indiana.edu or iupui.edu. When requesting a
web page outside the VPN server's domain (i.e., outside of
indiana.edu or iupui.edu), Pocket Internet
Explorer tries to bypass the VPN connection, causing the request to
fail.
For Pocket PC 2002 and earlier, you have to install a third-party browser such as NetFront or ThunderHawk to browse the web while using a VPN connection.
For Windows Mobile 2003 and later, you can enter *.* (asterisk, period, asterisk)
into the Intranet exceptions dialog box. For instructions on
performing this fix, see the Knowledge Base document At IUB and IUPUI, in Windows Mobile 2003, how do I make a VPN connection?
