In Mac OS X, how do I search for an address in the ADS Global Address List?

In Mac OS X 10.3 and later, the built-in Address Book is able to authenticate to Indiana University's Exchange servers, where the ADS Global Address List (GAL) is stored. This allows applications integrated into the OS X Address Book, such as OS X Mail, to look up names and email addresses in the ADS GAL. While this is a well-known feature of Microsoft Outlook, the current implementation will now allow any OS X application integrated into the OS X Address Book to take advantage of this feature.

To set up access to the ADS GAL, follow the steps below:

  1. Open the Address Book application. This is normally located in your Applications folder.

  2. From the Address Book menu, select Preferences... .

  3. In the toolbar at the top of the window that opens, click the LDAP icon.

  4. Click the + (the plus sign) to add a new server, and in the sheet that drops down, enter the following information:

Name: Type IU (or provide a name of your choosing).
    Server: Type ads.iu.edu .
Search Base: You may leave this field blank. If you wish, you may enter the following: dc=ads,dc=iu,dc=edu . Note that there are no spaces after the commas.
Port: Check the box next to Use SSL. Then, in the field, type 3268
Scope: Select Subtree from the pull-down menu.
Auth Type: Set this to Simple (this step appears out of order on the sheet, but you must complete this step before you can enter data into the rest of the fields).
User name: Type ads\username where username is your IU Network ID username.
Password: Type your IU Network ID passphrase.

  5. Click Save.

To search for names and addresses from within the OS X Address Book:

  1. In the leftmost pane in the main Address Book window, under "Group", select Directories.

  2. In the "Directories" column, select the IU server entry you created in the steps above.

  3. In the search box in the upper right corner of the window, begin typing the name of the person whose address you wish to find in the GAL.

To access the GAL from Mail, follow the steps below:

  1. Open OS X Mail, and from the Mail menu, select Preferences... .

  2. In the toolbar at the top of the window, click Composing.

  3. Make sure the box next to Automatically complete addresses is checked.

When you compose a new email message, as you type in names or addresses in the addressing fields, Mail will attempt to complete them using the GAL.
