ARCHIVED: What is the IP-grid?

The IP-grid is a joint Indiana University-Purdue University project to create part of the network to extend the TeraGrid to IU Bloomington, IUPUI, and Purdue's West Lafayette campus. Funded by a $3 million grant from the US National Science Foundation (NSF), the IP-grid enables researchers at the three campuses to collaborate with their colleagues across the nation on scientific research requiring advanced high-performance computing capabilities.

IU and Purdue also operate I-Light, an advanced optical-fiber network that links the three campuses. The IP-grid was created by extending I-Light to a TeraGrid node in Chicago via the acquisition of a new optical-fiber connection. Researchers from the campuses are thus able to collaborate with colleagues at other institutions in real time.

The TeraGrid is a grid computing project for building the world's largest, most comprehensive distributed computing infrastructure in support of open scientific research. Launched by the NSF in August 2001, the TeraGrid project now includes nine research institutions and various industry partners. When completed, the TeraGrid will include supercomputers, massive data storage systems, and instruments linked by a high-speed network (of which the IP-grid is a part) to facilitate scientific collaboration.
