Instructions for changing mail settings to meet UITS requirements
To improve security and reliability in the IU email environment, UITS now requires authentication and encryption on the outgoing (SMTP) mail servers. UITS has always required authentication to receive email, and now you need to enter your username and passphrase to send email as well.
Note: If you send mail using only IU Webmail or Outlook Web Access, or if you use Microsoft Outlook to connect directly (i.e., not using the IMAP protocol) to your Indiana University Exchange mailbox, this information does not apply to you.
If you use an IMAP client such as those listed below on
a computer connected to the IU network via Ethernet, the
modem pools, or wireless or remote VPN, you will need to
change your outgoing server to mail-relay.iu.edu and also
enable authentication and encryption.
Besides added security, an advantage of this change to you as an IMAP client user is that you will be able to use the same client settings regardless of how you connect to the Internet. Because they now require authentication, the IU SMTP servers will accept mail from you even if you connect via an outside Internet service provider (ISP); thus, you will no longer have to use your outside Internet service provider's mail relay setting.
For instructions on how to make the necessary changes, click the appropriate link from the list below. Also, for information regarding PDAs, see How do the UITS mail setting requirements affect the use of PDAs?
