ARCHIVED: At IU, how do I install the Oracle 9i Client?

On this page:

Running the Oracle Client setup from IUware Online

Note: Release 1 of the Oracle 9i Client is no longer available from IUware Online. The instructions in this step apply only to Release 2 of the Oracle 9i Client.

This method of installation is an alternative to using an Oracle Client CD. UITS does not recommend running this setup without an Ethernet connection.

  1. Visit the IUware Online web page at: http://iuware.iu.edu/
  2. Under "Software", choose Database.

  3. Select Oracle9i Client Software and Documentation from the list of choices.

  4. Click Download. Enter your Network ID when prompted, and then click Save to save the file to your computer.

  5. After the download is complete, start the installation wizard by double-clicking the setup.exe file that was saved to your computer. Once the InstallShield Wizard loads, click Next.

  6. By default, the wizard will install the necessary files to C:\IUware Online\Oracle 9i Client Release 2 for Windows 2000 and XP. If you would like to change to a different folder, click Browse... . To continue, click Next.

  7. The wizard will spend several minutes installing files to the directory you specified. When it is complete, check the box next to Install Oracle 9i Client Release 2 for Windows 2000 and XP, and then click Finish. If you prefer to not start the Oracle Client installation now, remove the check from this box and click Finish. When you are ready to install the Oracle Client, open the setup.exe program directly from the folder in which you installed the installation files.

  8. Continue to the next section when you are ready to install the Oracle Client.

Client installation process

Note: Before continuing, you must have the following four pieces of information:

Information needed Example (for Oed1)
Version of the database to connect to 8i or later
Name or System Identifier (SID) of the database, plus the full service name of the database SID = oed1
Service name = oed1.world
Port number The default port is 1521.
Name of the host computer where the database is located dbserv.uits.indiana.edu

If you use the IU Data Warehouse, for configuration information, see Oracle Client configuration information for the IU Data Warehouse below.

Verify the information above with the database administrator before proceeding. When you are ready to proceed with the installation:

  1. If you ran autorun.exe, from the list of possible actions, select Install/Deinstall Products.

  2. From the Oracle Universal Installer, choose Next.

  3. The installer will provide the default file locations for you. If you would like to enter an alternate path, you can do so in the available box or by selecting Browse... . When you are ready to continue, or if you do not want to change the file locations from their default values (recommended), select Next.

  4. The installer will load the product information and then present you with the Installation Types window. Unless you know that you want another type of installation, select Custom. Once you have selected your installation type, click Next.

  5. For Release 2 of the Oracle 9i Client, in the Available Product Components window, in the following order, select:

    • Oracle Network Utilities
    • Oracle Database Utilities
    • SQL*Plus
    • Oracle JDBC/OCI Interfaces
    • Oracle JDBC/Thin Interfaces
    • Oracle Call Interfaces
    • Oracle Programmer

For Release 1 of the Oracle 9i Client, in the Available Product Components window, in the following order, deselect:

    • Oracle Enterprise Manager Products 9.0.1.0.1
    • Oracle HTTP Server 1.3.12.0.3a
    • Oracle Internet Directory Client 3.0.1.1.0
    • Oracle Workflow Client 2.6.1.5.0
    • Oracle 9i Windows Documentation 9.0.1.0.1 (If you have plenty of storage space, you might choose to install this component. If so, leave it selected.)

Be sure that Oracle Net Services 9.0.1.1.1 and Oracle Programmer 9.0.1.1.1 are selected.

  6. When you have finished making your selections, click Next.

  7. Product information may take a couple of minutes to load. When the information is finished loading, a summary of the installation information will be displayed. If you have a previous version of the Oracle 9i Client on your computer, it may be uninstalled during your new installation. Installing an additional component that has not been installed yet will simply add the new component.

Review the summary information and if everything is satisfactory, choose Install to begin installing the software. The installation will take several minutes.

  8. To finalize the installation, you must configure Oracle Net. If you want to do this now, proceed to the next section. If you want to configure the Oracle Net Client at a later time, follow the instructions in the section Adding new database services.

Configuring Oracle Net

  1. In the Oracle Net Configuration Assistant window, click Next.

  2. In the Directory Usage Configuration window, select No unless you receive instructions otherwise. Click Next.

  3. Ensure that the Naming Methods Configuration window displays Local in the box labeled "Selected Naming Methods". Click Next.

  4. The Database Version window asks what version of Oracle database or service to access. Choose the same version of database as the version of the database to which you will connect. If you are connecting to Oed1 or the IU Data Warehouse, choose 8i or later database or service. Click Next.

  5. If you selected 8 as the version in step 4, you will be prompted for the Database SID (for example, oed1). Enter the Database SID and click Next.

If you selected 8i or later as the version in step 4, you will be prompted for the database service name. This is the Database SID followed by an extension (e.g., oed1.world). Enter the full service name.

Note: If you do not know the service name, check with the database administrator.

    Click Next to continue.

  6. Select TCP, and then click Next.

  7. Enter your hostname.

For Oed1, the hostname is dbserv.uits.indiana.edu . Unless specified otherwise, leave the port number as the default port, 1521. To continue, click Next.

  8. Choose Yes, perform test, and then select Next.

Note: If the login test fails, select Change Login, enter your correct user information, and then try again. Choose Next when the test is successful.

  9. Enter a net service name. UITS recommends using the same name that you supplied in step 5. If you are connecting to a version 8i or later database, UITS recommends appending .world to the name (e.g., oed1.world). Click Next.

  10. If you would like to configure another net service name, select Yes and follow these steps again. Otherwise, select No, and then click Next.

  11. Once you have configured all of your net service names, click Next twice, then choose Finish, and then Exit. When asked if you really want to exit, select Yes to exit.

After following the steps above, you are finished setting up the Oracle Client. You may want to continue to one of the following sections:

Configuring and locating an ODBC data source

Programs that use ODBC to connect to remote databases must have a way to identify the type of database and the computer to which they wish to connect. This is accomplished through an ODBC data source, which associates a name with some database connection information. In the case of Oracle, the database connection information is simply the name of the Oracle Net service you set up when configuring the Oracle Client. To configure and locate an ODBC data source:

  1. From the Start menu, click Settings, then Control Panel.

  2. Select Administrative Tools, then Data Sources (ODBC) or ODBC Data Sources.

  3. At the top of the ODBC Data Source Administrator window, select the tab labeled System DSN, and then click Add... .

  4. Select from the list Oracle in OraHome92 (for Release 2) or Oracle in Orahome90 (for Release 1), and then click Finish.

  5. Enter your information in the window that appears, and then click OK.

The following example will create an Oracle ODBC data source for the Oed1 database on dbserv.uits.indiana.edu:

    Field Explanation Example
Data source name User-specified name by which you will refer to this ODBC data source oed1_ora
Description Not required; just a phrase reminding you why you created this ODBC data source Oracle ODBC for Oed1 database on dbserv.uits.indiana.edu
Service name The net service name you created for the database to which you want to connect oed1.world
User name Usually left blank; you will be prompted for this later when you make an ODBC connection to the database.

  6. The ODBC data source you added will now appear in your System DSN list. Click OK to finish your ODBC configuration.
