At IU, in Mac OS X, how do I configure Entourage 2008 to read my Cyrus or IU Exchange mail using IMAP?
Note: Office 2008 requires Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later. UITS does not recommend any version of Office older than 2004, or any version of Mac OS older than 10.4.11.
Note: Microsoft will end support for Office 2008 for Mac in April 2013. UITS recommends upgrading to 2011.
In Mac OS X, you can configure Entourage 2008 to read your Cyrus or IU Exchange mail at Indiana University using IMAP. However, UITS recommends that you do not use IMAP to connect to your IU Exchange account, as that will limit the functionality of Entourage; see At IU, in Mac OS X, how do I configure Entourage 2008 to access my Exchange account?
Note: If you have never run Entourage before, a Setup Assistant will appear when you first launch the program. However, since these instructions explain how to set up your account manually, close that window if you see it.
- Launch Entourage. From the
Entouragemenu, selectAccount Settings....
- In the
Accountswindow that appears, click theMailtab, and then clickNew. If theAccount Setup Assistantwindow appears, at the bottom of the window, clickConfigure account manually.
- In the
New Accountwindow that opens, from the pull-down menu next to "Account type:", selectIMAP. ClickOK.
- In the
Edit Accountwindow, click theAccount Settingstab.
- In the "Account name:" field, enter a name for your account. This
can be any name you wish; for example, at IU, you could use
CyrusorExchange.
- Check
Include this account in my "Send & Receive All" schedule.
- In the "Name:" field, enter the name you want to appear in the
"From:" headers of email messages you send. Normally, this should be
your real name.
- Enter your email address in the appropriate field.
If you are unsure of your exact IU email address, see At IU, what is my email address?
- In the "Account ID:" field, enter your email username (e.g.,
dvader).
- In the appropriate field, enter the hostname of your IMAP server:
- To access your Cyrus mail account, enter
imap.iu.edu. - To access your Exchange account, enter
imap.exchange.iu.edu.
- To access your Cyrus mail account, enter
- If you are the only person who has access to your computer, you
may want Entourage to save your password. Check
Save password:orSave password in my Mac OS Keychain. Then, enter your password in the "Password:" or "Save password:" field.
- Select
Click here for advanced receiving options. A window will appear with several additional mail reception settings. CheckThis IMAP server requires a secure connection (SSL). Then, close this window.
- You will be in the
Edit accountwindow.In the "Outgoing" or "SMTP" server field, type:
mail-relay.iu.edu - Select
Click here for advanced sending options, and a small preference window will pop up. Set the following:
- Check
SMTP service requires secure connection (SSL). - If you experience difficulty sending mail on port 25, check
Override default SMTP port:and change the number from 25 to 465 or 587. - Check
SMTP server requires authentication, and then selectUse same settings as receiving mail server. - In the field under "Domain for unqualified addresses", you can
optionally type a default domain. For example, specifying
indiana.eduwould allow you to send mail to most users at IU Bloomington by using just their usernames.
Click the square in the upper left corner of the pop-up window to close it.
- Check
- Under the
OptionsandAdvancedtabs, you can change a few additional settings, but they are usually not required to access your IMAP mail. ClickOK.
- Back in the
Accountswindow, if you have more than one account set up, click the one that you use most often, and then clickMake Default.
