At IU, using ERDAS IMAGINE, how do I correct the error "Cannot find valid license information"?

At Indiana University, if you experience license service problems with ERDAS IMAGINE, you may see the error message "The desired vendor daemon is down" or "License server cannot be reached". These messages could mean one of the following:

  • Your computer does not have permission to use the ERDAS license service.
  • Your computer is not able to connect to the necessary license server.
  • The license service is not running.

To find a solution, follow the instructions below for either the central license service (for computers connected to the IU network) or local license manager (for computers not connected to the IU network).

ERDAS IMAGINE using the central license service

  1. Confirm that you have administrative rights on your computer; see On a computer, what are administrators and administrative rights?

  2. If your computer is new or you have a new ERDAS license, confirm that your computer's hostname was added to the license service. If you are unsure, email the GIS Support Specialists with your computer's name (case sensitive), the name of the license holder, and your IU department or organization; see In Windows, how do I find my computer's hostname?

  3. Confirm that ERDAS IMAGINE is configured with the correct license server addresses. Open the ERDAS-Net License Administration Tool. The first server should be erdas1.uits.indiana.edu at port 27001, as it is the primary service. The second server should be erdas2.uits.indiana.edu at port 27001, as it is the backup failover service. If any other license servers are listed, remove them. For more, see At IU, how do I configure ERDAS IMAGINE to use the central license service?

  4. Temporarily disable your computer's firewall (see In Windows Vista, how do I enable or disable the firewall? or In Windows XP, how do I enable or disable the firewall?), and then try step 3 again. If this fixes the problem, you will need to add port 27001 to your computer's firewall exceptions.

  5. Make sure your computer is connected to the IU network, either by connecting from an IU campus or using the IU VPN.

  6. If you use a static IP address instead of DHCP, you may need a reverse lookup record for your computer; see For a computer in Indiana University's ADS domain, how can I register a DNS reverse lookup (PTR) record?

  7. Confirm that uits.indiana.edu is a DNS suffix in your computer's local network; see In Windows 2000, XP, or Vista, how do I change the DNS and WINS server IP numbers?

ERDAS IMAGINE using a local license manager

Try the following in this order, checking to see whether IMAGINE will work after each step:

  1. Confirm that ERDAS IMAGINE points to the license manager on your computer. For an IMAGINE 9.3 local license, only one source should be listed. If other license servers are listed, remove them. For more, see At IU, how do I install ERDAS IMAGINE 9.3?

  2. Restart the ERDAS License Service:

    1. Open the ERDAS-Net License Administration Tool.
    2. Expand the License Sources folder and select the local license source.
    3. From the Server menu, select Stop Local License Server.
    4. Select Start Local License Server.

  3. Open the license file in WordPad or another text editor, and then confirm that the local license file has not expired.

  4. Confirm that the system ID on the license file is the same as the system ID on your computer:

    1. From the Start menu, select Programs, then ERDAS, then ERDAS-Net Licensing, and then Show System ID.
    2. Note the local area connection ID or dongle ID (if you are using an ERDAS dongle). Keep this window open.
    3. Open the local license file (.elf) in WordPad or another text editor. The default location for the license file is C:\Program Files\ERDAS\Shared\licensing\licenses\floating-licenses\LocalServerLicense.elf.
    4. The System ID in the ERDAS-Net window should be the same as the "SERVER this_host" ID at the top of the license file.
    5. If it is the same, reload the license file. If it is not the same, email the GIS Support Specialists.

  5. Reload the ERDAS license file:

    1. From the Start menu, select Programs, then ERDAS, then ERDAS-Net Licensing, and then License Administration.
    2. From the File menu, select Load License File.
    3. Browse to your local license file (.elf) that was provided as an email attachment from a UITS GIS Support Specialist (e.g., 000c29ced942_1230200806.elf).
    4. Select the license file and click Open.
    5. In the License File Info window, click OK.
