At IU, using ERDAS IMAGINE, how do I correct the error "Cannot find valid license information"?
At Indiana University, if you receive this error, or experience other license service problems with ERDAS IMAGINE, you may see messages such as the following:
The desired vendor daemon is down
License server cannot be reached.
These messages could mean one of the following:
- Your computer does not have permission to use the ERDAS license service.
- Your computer is not able to connect to the necessary license server.
- The license service is not running.
To find a solution, follow the instructions below for either the central license service (for computers connected to the IU network) or local license manager (for computers not connected to the IU network).
ERDAS IMAGINE using the central license service
- Confirm that you have administrative rights on your computer.
- If your computer is new or you have a new ERDAS license, confirm
that your computer's hostname was added to the license service. If
you are unsure, email the GIS
Support Specialists with your computer's name (case sensitive),
the name of the license holder, and your IU department or
organization.
- Confirm that ERDAS IMAGINE is configured with the correct license
server addresses. Open the ERDAS-Net License Administration Tool. The
first server should be
erdas1.uits.indiana.eduat port 27001, as it is the primary service. The second server should beerdas2.uits.indiana.eduat port 27001, as it is the backup failover service. If any other license servers are listed, remove them. For more, see At IU, how do I install ERDAS IMAGINE 2013?
- Temporarily disable your computer's firewall.
For help, see Microsoft Support.
Try step 3 again. If this fixes the problem, you will need to add port 27001 to your computer's firewall exceptions.
- Make sure your computer is connected to the IU network, either by
connecting from an IU campus or using the IU VPN.
- If you use a static IP address instead of
DHCP, you may need a reverse lookup record for your
computer; see For a computer in Indiana University's ADS domain, how can I register a DNS reverse lookup (PTR) record?
- Confirm that
uits.indiana.eduis a DNS suffix in your computer's local network; see In Windows 8 and earlier, how do I change the DNS and WINS server IP numbers?
ERDAS IMAGINE using a local license manager
Try the following in this order, checking to see whether IMAGINE will work after each step:
- Confirm that ERDAS IMAGINE points to the license manager on your
computer. For an IMAGINE 2010 or 9.3 local license, only one source
should be listed. If other license servers are listed, remove
them. For more, see At IU, how do I install ERDAS IMAGINE 2013?
- Restart the ERDAS License Service:
- Open the ERDAS-Net License Administration Tool.
- Expand the
License Sourcesfolder and select the local license source. - From the
Servermenu, selectStop Local License Server. - Select
Start Local License Server.
- Open the license file in WordPad or another text editor, and then
confirm that the local license file has not expired.
- Confirm that the system ID on the license file is the same as the
system ID on your computer:
- From the
Startmenu, selectAll Programs, thenERDAS 2010orERDAS, thenERDAS-Net Licensing 2010orERDAS-Net Licensing, and thenShow System ID. - Note the local area connection ID or dongle ID (if you are using an ERDAS dongle). Keep this window open.
- Open the local license file (
.elf) in WordPad or another text editor. The default location for the license file isC:\Program Files\ERDAS\Shared\licensing\licenses\floating-licenses\LocalServerLicense.elf. - The System ID in the
ERDAS-Netwindow should be the same as the "SERVER this_host" ID at the top of the license file. - If it is the same, reload the license file. If it is not the same, email the GIS Support Specialists.
- From the
- Reload the ERDAS license file:
- From the
Startmenu, selectPrograms, thenERDAS, thenERDAS-Net Licensing, and thenLicense Administration. - From the
Filemenu, selectLoad License File. - Browse to your local license file (
.elf) that was provided as an email attachment from a UITS GIS Support Specialist (e.g.,000c29ced942_1230200806.elf). - Select the license file and click
Open. - In the
License File Infowindow, clickOK.
