How do I convert my ProCite database to EndNote?

To avoid incompatibility issues with EndNote 8 and Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), upgrade to a later version of EndNote. You can download a current version from IUware Online at:

http://iuware.iu.edu/title.aspx?id=645

In EndNote 5, 6, and 7 for Windows, you can open your ProCite database in EndNote to convert it. If you are using EndNote 8 or 9, you will need to convert your database to a text file in ProCite, and then import it into EndNote. Macintosh versions of EndNote cannot convert ProCite databases; if you primarily use a Macintosh computer, you will need to convert your database on a Windows computer.

Note: Although they are similar software programs made by the same company, ProCite and EndNote handle data differently. After you convert your ProCite database to EndNote, you will most likely need to review your imported data and fix any conversion anomalies. For example, when importing records with corporate authors, you will need to add commas in EndNote to designate the corporate entry. Additionally, EndNote may export some of your data unexpectedly to the "Notes" field. If this occurs, move it to the appropriate fields. Your original ProCite database files will not be affected, so you may reference them in ProCite as needed.

To convert your ProCite database to EndNote in Windows, follow the appropriate steps below:

Endnote 8 or 9 for Windows

  1. Download the ProCite Output Style file RIS-EndNote.pos from Thomson ISI ResearchSoft's web site. To get it, go to the EndNote FAQ at the following URL and click RIS-EndNote.pos in step 2: http://www.endnote.com/support/faqs/Import/faq3.asp
  2. When your browser prompts you to either save or open the file, save it to your ProCite Styles folder.

  3. In ProCite, open the database you wish to convert, and then from the File menu, select Print Bibliography.

  4. In the Print Bibliography window:

    1. Under "Output Style", choose RIS-EndNote.pos.
    2. Click the Configure button and then the Fields tab.
    3. In the Fields window, check all optional fields, and then click OK.

  5. Save your database as a text file and exit ProCite.

  6. Open EndNote and then open the library you wish to import your ProCite database into or create a new reference library. From the File menu, select Import... .

  7. In the Import window, click Choose File... . Browse to the text file you created and click Open.

  8. In the drop-down menu next to "Import Option:", select Reference Manager (RIS). For the remaining import options, select the appropriate options for your library.

  9. Click Import.

EndNote 5, 6, or 7 for Windows

  1. In EndNote, to open the ProCite database you wish to convert, from the File menu, select Open, and then Open Library. In the Open window that appears, browse to find your ProCite database file, and then click Open.

  2. In the dialog box that appears, click Customize if you wish to select your destination Reference Types and EndNote fields. If you do not wish to specify your field and reference type mappings, click Convert.

  3. Enter a name for your EndNote library and click Save.
