In 1997, the US Congress passed the Taxpayer Relief Act, which includes the Hope Scholarship and Lifetime Learning Tax Credits. This law allows you to claim qualified educational expenses as a tax credit on your federal tax return. Indiana University is required to report annually on Form 1098T whether you were enrolled at least half-time for at least one semester during the calendar year and if you were enrolled in graduate level courses. It must also report amounts you paid during the calendar year for qualified fees and any scholarships, grants, or other funds you received during the year that offset these qualified fees.
If you need additional information, email FMS Taxpayer. You can find additional information in IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Higher Education.
