At IU, what is the Advanced Visualization Lab?
The Advanced Visualization Lab (AVL) at Indiana University provides consulting, research support, educational and outreach opportunities, and hardware and software resources for scientific visualization, virtual reality, high-end computer graphics, and visual telecollaboration. The AVL affords new opportunities to achieve excellence in research, education, creative activities, and community engagement, and seeks collaboration with IU students, faculty, and staff to deliver engaging research and scholarship through the application of advanced visualization technologies.
The AVL provides, promotes, and maintains facilities on the IU Bloomington and IUPUI campuses, but can advise and suggest remote, distributed visualization resources, as well. AVL staff have expertise in a variety of areas, including scientific and information visualization, virtual reality, 2D and 3D computer graphics and media, haptic and advanced interfaces, 3D scanning technologies, and the creative application of digital technologies for the arts.
The AVL is a unit of the Research Technologies division, affiliated with University Information Technology Services (UITS) and the Pervasive Technology Institute (PTI). The AVL is also a key partner with the IU Institute for Digital Arts and Humanities (IDAH), and coordinates IU's participation in Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) visualization activities.
