How do I use ArcGIS to connect to the Indiana Spatial Data Service?

One of the most useful aspects of the Indiana Spatial Data Service (ISDS) is the ability to load its Internet map services directly as data layers into ESRI's desktop GIS software, including ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Explorer. Follow the instructions below to create a connection by GIS Server to the ISDS map services:

Connect using ArcMap

  1. Open ArcMap, and click Add Data.

  2. In the Add Data dialog box, from the "Look In" drop-down menu, choose GIS Servers.

  3. Double-click Add ArcIMS Server.

  4. Enter the URL for the server: http://gis.iu.edu:8502
  5. Choose the All services option, and then click OK.

  6. In the Add Data dialog box, double-click the gis.iu.edu_8502 connection to view available map services.

  7. Select one or more map services, and then click Add to load the map services into ArcMap.

Connect using ArcCatalog

  1. Open ArcCatalog. In the Catalog tree, expand the GIS Servers folder.

  2. Double-click Add ArcIMS Server.

  3. Enter the URL for the server: http://gis.iu.edu:8502
  4. Choose the All services option, and then click OK.

  5. In the Catalog Tree, expand the gis.iu.edu_8502 connection to view available map services.

  6. Select one map service, and then select the Preview tab to view the map service in ArcCatalog.
