One of the most useful aspects of the Indiana Spatial Data Service (ISDS) is the ability to load its map services directly as data layers into Esri's desktop GIS software, including ArcGIS for Desktop and ArcGIS Explorer. There are two ways to create a connection by GIS Server to the ISDS map services.

Connect using ArcMap

  1. Open ArcMap, and then click Add Data.
  2. In the Add Data dialog box, from the Look In drop-down menu, choose GIS Servers.
  3. Double-click Add ArcGIS Server.
  4. Select Use GIS Services, and then click Next.
  5. Select Internet and enter the following URL for the server:
      http://gis.uits.iu.edu/ArcGIS/rest/services
  6. Click Finish.
  7. In the Add Data dialog box, double-click arcgis on gis.uits.iu.edu to view available map services.
  8. Select one or more map services, and then click Add to load the map services into ArcMap.

Connect using ArcCatalog

  1. Open ArcCatalog. In the Catalog tree, expand the GIS Servers folder.
  2. Double-click Add ArcGIS Server.
  3. Select Use GIS Services and click Next.
  4. Select Internet and enter the following URL for the server:
      http://gis.uits.iu.edu/ArcGIS/rest/services
  5. Click Finish.
  6. In the Catalog tree, double-click arcgis on gis.uits.iu.edu to view available map services.

Note: To rename the service, select it and press F2 on your keyboard.

  7. Select one map service, and then select the Preview tab to view the map service in ArcCatalog.
