Account A tool in My Workspace where users can set their authorized email addresses. See Changing your authorized email address.
Announcements A tool used to inform site participants of current items of interest, such as a schedule or policy change. Announcements can have multiple attachments, such as documents or URLs, and they can be automatically emailed to all site participants. More...
Assignments A tool that allows instructors to create, distribute, collect, and grade online assignments for courses. Assignment submissions are private and invisible to other users of the site. Instructors can download all assignment submissions to their computer at once, and can decide when to release grades for a particular assignment. Assignments can also be returned, with or without grades, for resubmission. More...
Assignments Beta A tool in pilot phase for spring semester 2009 that allows instructors to create, distribute, collect, and grade online assignments. Assignment submissions are private and invisible to other users of the site. Instructors can download all assignment submissions to their computer and upload grades and grade comments; instructors can also decide when to release grades for a particular assignment. Assignments can be returned, with or without grades, for resubmission; instructors can also specify the number of submissions students can turn in for each assignment at the outset. More...

Authorized email address A participant can send email to the Email Archive only from an authorized email address. Also, the authorized email address is where email from other participants is received. Participants can change the authorized email address via My Workspace. Calendar A tool that displays information such as class session dates, deadlines, web assignment dates, special events, cancellations, and other items of interest in calendar format. More...
Candidate A participant role in a project site. More...
Chat Room A tool for real time (synchronous) unstructured online discussion with other worksite participants who are also logged into the workspace. Chat is sometimes faster and more convenient than waiting for information to post in the discussion area. For example, chat is perfect for holding online office hours. More...
Citations Editor Integration A feature that allows users at IU Bloomington and IUPUI to search for citations from within the WYSIWYG editor. More...
Course site The official site for a particular academic course

Drop Box A tool that allows instructors and students to share documents within a private folder for each student. Many types of files can be uploaded, and many files can be added at a time. The Drop Box also allows nested folders (folders within folders). More...

Email archive A function used to store email sent to all participants via the site email address. Email sent to individual participants in the site will not be stored here. In addition to viewing email messages, you can use this function both to view the site's email address and create an easy-to-remember alias for the site's email address. More...

Global access A site-wide setting that site owners can choose. It grants access to the site to specific people or to anyone who has the authorization to log into Oncourse CL.
Groups Instructors and site leaders can create study groups, project teams, and other non-official subsets of worksite participants. See Managing groups.

Home A button on the menubar that takes you to the course or project site home page. Home contains a list of recent site announcements, chat messages, and Messages and Forums notifications.

Import A function that allows the user to import another site's content, content from selected tools, or combine the content from multiple sites into one site.

Membership A tool to add yourself to publicly joinable sites. It is located in the My Workspace tab.
Menubar An element that lists the tools available in a site. It displays vertically on the left-hand side of the screen in Oncourse CL. Site owners can designate which tools to activate for each course or worksite in the Site Setup tool. More...
Messages A tool that allows participants to communicate using internal course mail. Messages can be delivered within Oncourse CL to the recipient's Received folder in Messages, or to individual or group email accounts. More...
Messages and Forums notifications Notifies participants (on the Home page and in My Workspace) of unread forum postings and messages
My Workspace An individual worksite for each Oncourse CL user that, among other things, consolidates calendar and announcement information for all sites in which you participate. When you log directly into Oncourse CL, My Workspace is the default site that opens. My Workspace also allows you to create and post private items, revise your worksites by adding users or changing tools, choose how you would like to be notified of new or changed items on sites you belong to, and add yourself to publicly joinable (globally accessible) sites. News A function allowing a user to view news, via an RSS feed. An RSS feed is a specially formatted list of news articles, updated automatically from an external web site. Site owners can set up a site to display news by entering the URL to an RSS news feed. More...

Official Final Grades A tool allowing instructors and their proxies to submit the final, official grades for a course through Oncourse CL for course sites up through summer 2008; replaced for courses in fall 2008 and later with the SIS Grade Roster tool. More...

Oncourse CL Oncourse Collaboration and Learning (Oncourse CL) is developed in partnership with other academic institutions, and provides all faculty and students at IU with a powerful environment in which to collaborate and learn. Oncourse CL allows for novel and innovative ways of accessing materials and information.
Original Oncourse Original Oncourse, a course management system built in-house at Indiana University, was retired at the end of the summer 2007 semester. UITS replaced original Oncourse with Oncourse CL.
Original Test and Survey Tool Lets instructors collect answers to questions online. Most people use it to administer tests, but it also can serve for gathering survey information, perhaps for informal course feedback. More...

Participants The users of a particular course or worksite. Participants are granted different privileges based on their roles.
PDF (Portable Document Format) The native file format for Adobe Systems' Acrobat. PDF documents can be viewed with free reader software, available from Adobe. PDF documents are easily shared with people using a wide variety of computers.
Permissions A function that allows or prevents participants from seeing or performing certain tasks in a tool depending on their roles. Site owners can set different permissions for different tools. More...
Podcasts Allows site leaders to create, store, and distribute multimedia content to site participants via an RSS feed. More...
Post'Em Allows site leaders to upload comma-delimited (CSV) spreadsheets to present feedback to site participants. More...
Practice course site A worksite that emulates course site functionality, so instructors can practice and prepare for future classes they may teach. To populate the roster, you can use the Site Setup tool to add participants and assign roles. More...
Preferences A tool that allows users to set their own preferences for being notified about new announcements, resources, and site email messages. It is located in the My Workspace tab.
Privacy Status Participants can hide their names from other participants, or make them visible. See Changing your privacy status.
Profile A tool in My Workspace that allows participants to enter, or choose to display, public and personal information, including an institutional ID picture if available. More...
Project site A worksite designed to facilitate collaboration. You can invite anyone you wish to join your project site.
Public View A function that allows elements in a site (such as a syllabus) to be viewable to anyone who has authorization to access Oncourse CL. If you make your site element publicly viewable, any user of Oncourse can see it and will have access-level rights.

Refresh A function of a web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer or Firefox) that contacts the server for updated information. When using Oncourse, you may want to refresh your browser periodically to make sure you have the most up-to-date information in a worksite. Oncourse also automatically refreshes your view periodically.
Resources A tool for making different materials, like documents, electronic files, or web site addresses, available for users of a course or project site. Using the Permissions feature of this tool, site owners can control which types of users can post, delete, and read documents in specific folders within Resources. More...
Roles Attributes assigned to site participants. Roles are simply a collection of permissions that allow specific access within a worksite. Course sites and project sites each have a set of default roles available. More...
Roster Group- and section-aware tool that allows you to view the names, photos, and profiles of site participants. More...
RSS A format for syndicating news. "News" in this context can encompass not only current events but also recent changes to a web page, CVS check-ins, or the revision history of a document. Site owners can add RSS via the News tool.

SIS Grade Roster A tool allowing instructors to use a course site's gradebook to submit final course grades. More...
siteID The siteID for your course or project site is the string of numbers and letters appearing immediately after site/ in the site's URL.
Site owner A collective term for both instructors and owners
Site Setup A tool that displays information about the site for site participants. Site owners can make changes to information about the site, tools, and access to the site. More...
Student A participant role for a course site. More...
Syllabus The official outline for a course. Instructors can upload a copy of it or provide a link to it if it already exists elsewhere online. More...

Up arrow icon The up arrow icon appears to the left of the tool name and looks like a green arrow pointing up. It returns you to the top page of the tool you are using. Clicking on the tool name itself has the same result.
URL Universal Resource Locator. The unique address of a computer, web site, or document on the Internet.
