At IU, in Mozilla Thunderbird for Mac OS X, how do I read my Cyrus or IU Exchange mail using IMAP?

Note: If this is the first time you are
configuring an account in Thunderbird, a Mail Account
Setup window might appear. If it does, skip to step 3
and continue with the instructions.
- In Thunderbird, from the
Toolsmenu, selectAccount Settings....
- In the sheet that appears, click
Account Actions, and then selectAdd Mail Account....
- In the next sheet, next to "Your name:", enter your name as you
want it to appear in the "From:" field of your outgoing messages.
- Next to "Email address:", type your Indiana University email
address.
If you are unsure of your exact IU email address, see At IU, what is my email address?
- Next to "Password:", enter your IU passphrase. Click
Continue.
- In the next sheet, Thunderbird will attempt to guess your mail
settings, but will fail. Click
Stop.
- Next to "Incoming:", type the name of your mail
server:
- To access your Cyrus mail account, enter
imap.iu.edu. - To access your Exchange account, enter
imap.exchange.iu.edu.
In the pop-up menu next to the "Incoming:" field, make sure thatIMAPis selected. In the next field, type993, and in the pop-up menu to the right of that, selectSSL/TLS.
- To access your Cyrus mail account, enter
- Next to "Outgoing:", type
mail-relay.iu.edu. In the field to the right of that, type465, and in the pop-up menu to the right of that, selectSSL/TLS.
- Click
Re-test Configuration, and assuming it succeeds, clickCreate Account.
Once you've created your account, the Account Settings sheet will appear. From here, you can customize your settings.

Note: If this is the first time you are configuring
an account in Thunderbird, the Account Wizard might appear. If it
does, click Cancel, and then follow these instructions:
- In Thunderbird, from the
Toolsmenu, selectAccount Settings..., and then clickAdd Account....
- In the
New Account Setupwindow, selectEmail account, and clickContinue.
- In the
Identitywindow, next to "Your Name:", enter your name as you want it to appear in the "From:" field of your outgoing messages.Note: This information may already be present, but you can modify it.
- Next to "Email Address:", type your Indiana University email
address, and click
Continue.If you are unsure of your exact IU email address, see At IU, what is my email address?
- In the
Server Informationwindow, selectIMAP. Next to "Incoming Server:", type the name of your mail server:
- To access your Cyrus mail account, enter
imap.iu.edu. - To access your Exchange account, enter
imap.exchange.iu.edu.
- To access your Cyrus mail account, enter
- Click
Continue.
- In the
User Nameswindow, verify that your incoming username is correct, and clickContinue.
- In the
Account Namewindow, create a name for your new account. You might want to enter something to differentiate it from existing accounts (e.g.,IU Account). ClickContinue.
- Verify that the information you entered is correct. To make
corrections, click
Go Back; otherwise, clickDone.
- On the left, under the name of the new account you just created,
select
Server Settings.
- On the right, under "Security Settings", select
SSL. Make sure thatUse secure authenticationis not selected.
- Click
OKto save the changes and exit.
Sending mail
Note: Thunderbird will send mail using your existing outgoing server (if you have one). To use the IU outgoing mail server:
- From the
Toolsmenu, selectAccount Settings.
- On the left, select
Outgoing Server (SMTP).
- On the right, next to the server list, click
Add....
- Next to "Description:", type a descriptive name for the server
(e.g.,
IU).
- Next to "Server Name:", type: mail-relay.iu.edu
- Verify that the "Port:" field is set to
465.
- Select
Use name and password, and enter your IU username.
- Under "Use secure connection:", select
SSL.
- To save your changes and exit, click
OKtwice.
When you send mail, when prompted, enter your Network ID
passphrase and click OK. If you want Thunderbird to remember
your passphrase, select Use Password Manager to remember this
password. .
Reading mail
To read your mail, in the Folders pane on the left, click
Inbox. When prompted, enter your Network ID passphrase and
click OK. If you want Thunderbird to remember your passphrase,
select Use Password Manager to remember this password. .
Subscribing to folders
- Make sure Thunderbird can download messages from your Inbox (see the
"Configuring Thunderbird" section for your version above), and then
Ctrl-click the account name in the folder list and chooseSubscribe....
- Check each folder you would like to access, and then click
Subscribe. (If you have subfolders, you will have to click the arrow next to the parent folder to view them.)
- When you're finished, click
OKat the bottom.
Note: If you have a Cyrus account, the folders will be listed under the Inbox; you may have to click the arrow to expand the folder list to see them.
