ARCHIVED: At IU, what Pictometry datasets are available?

Pictometry, a digital, oblique aerial photography company, develops an information system that provides high-resolution images from multiple views with a simple interface. While Pictometry libraries contain orthogonal (straight down) images like ordinary aerial imaging, over 80% of Pictometry's images are oblique (taken at an angle), allowing you to view features in their entirety (e.g., the front door of a house, the back door, the windows). To learn more about Pictometry and oblique imagery, see the Pictometry FAQ.

While many major cities across the United States use Pictometry's imagery, Indiana University was the first academic institution to receive oblique imagery from Pictometry. With funding from Facilities Information Management System at IU and cooperation from the IMAGIS Program, UITS provides network access to two Pictometry datasets. The first dataset covers Indianapolis/Marion County and was taken in March 2006. The second dataset, taken in December 2006, covers the IU Bloomington campus and the northeast section of Bloomington. Neither dataset may be used for profit or copied to sources outside the IU system.

The software and datasets are provided free of charge to IU faculty and staff, who can request access to Pictometry's Electronic Field Study (EFS) software by completing the GIS Software Request Online Form. IU's site license with Pictometry does not currently allow software access to students. Once you have been given permission to use Pictometry imagery, you can download the software from IUware Online.

The orthophotography for the IUB Pictometry dataset is available for free from the Indiana Spatial Data Portal.
