At IU, running ArcGIS, if I receive the error message "Checkout exceeds MAX specified in options file", what should I do?
While using ArcGIS with the ESRI Central License Service, you might see the error message "Checkout exceeds MAX specified in options file". This message means that you have more instances of ArcGIS open than you have licenses for. For example, let's say your department has paid for two ArcGIS ArcView licenses and two ArcGIS ArcInfo licenses. If there are four instances of ArcGIS open, the fifth instance will see this error message. A user might also see this error message if two instances of ArcInfo are already running and a third instance attempts to open. Even though there are two unused ArcView licenses in this example, the third instance of ArcInfo will be denied.
If your department has unused ArcView licenses available, you may choose to change the ArcGIS product level from ArcInfo to ArcView; see In ArcGIS, how do I change the product level?
If this adjustment does not fix the problem, you may have exceeded the number of licenses available for your organization or department. At this point, you have several options:
- Limit the number of concurrent ArcGIS users for your department.
- Try to use ArcGIS during non-peak hours, such as evenings and weekends.
- Purchase more ArcGIS licenses; see At IU, how do I purchase ESRI software?
