At IU, how do I obtain ESRI maps and data?

The ESRI Data & Maps collection contains many types of map data at many scales of geography. The data are useful for general purpose basemaps and for more specific uses. For each geographic scale included, the significant basemap layers are boundaries, cities, rivers, and roads. Where possible, demographic data are provided for states, counties, and their equivalents. Vector datasets include the United States, Europe, Canada, Mexico, and the world. Image and elevation data are available for North America and the world.

All vector data are provided in Smart Data Compression (SDC) format. Raster data are in various formats such as the Grid and MrSid image formats. Each dataset includes complete metadata documentation, as well as an ArcGIS layer (.lyr) file displaying symbols and classifications for the dataset when viewed in ArcGIS. Each SDC file also includes a projection (.prj) file that stores the coordinate systems information used by ArcGIS. Map document (.mxd) files are included to provide symbolized maps of the datasets. For more, see the ESRI Data web page.

At Indiana University, you can find these datasets at the following locations:

  • IUware Online: ESRI Data and Maps. These data are free to all IU students, faculty, and staff (authenticate with your Network ID).

  • Windows Student Technology Centers (STCs): At IU Bloomington, ESRI Maps & Data are available on the R: drive. To select this dataset, click Start. Select Programs, then Departmentally Sponsored, then Geog, then ArcGIS, and then select the shortcut for ESRI_DataMaps.

For more information about this software on various campuses, see At IU, in which STCs can I use GIS software?

You can also find online data services for imagery, street maps, and more at the ESRI Resource Center for ArcGIS Desktop.
