At IU, how do I obtain ESRI tutorials?

Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) provides PDF software tutorials with concise and easy-to-follow directions for using ESRI's software products. These ArcGIS software tutorials give step-by-step instructions for learning how to perform data analysis functions. See the following tutorial resources:

  • ArcGIS Desktop Resource Center:

    1. Access via this link. You may also find a shortcut to this link in ArcGIS Desktop. From the Help menu, select ArcGIS Desktop Resource Center. A web browser will open to the ESRI Resource Center for ArcGIS Desktop.

    2. In the "Helpful Resources" section, select Tutorials and Videos.

    3. Use the Read the tutorial links to view a PDF tutorial. You may save these tutorials to your computer. Click Watch the tutorial to see animated demonstrations based on the tutorials.

  • Tutorials in IUB STCs: At Indiana University Bloomington, the ArcGIS tutorials are available in the Student Technology Centers (STCs). From the Start menu, select All Programs, then Departmentally Sponsored, then GIS, then ArcGIS, and then ArcGIS9-3_Tutorials. A Windows Explorer file directory will open to the PDF tutorials. The exercise data is located in the ArcTutor directory. All data is read-only. To modify or edit data, move it to a local file directory or USB drive with write access. For example, you may use C:\temp.

  • Tutorials in IUPUI STCs: These tutorials are located in C:\ArcGIS\ArcTutor. For a list of STC labs, see At IU, in which student labs can I use GIS software?

  • Tutorials with ArcGIS Desktop: If you installed ArcGIS Desktop on your workstation, the PDF tutorials were installed by default in C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Documentation.

  • Exercise data with ArcGIS Desktop: The exercise data for the above PDF tutorials requires a separate installation from ArcGIS Desktop. From IUware Online, download ArcGIS 9.3 Tutorial Data. Once installed, the exercise data will be located in C:\ArcGIS\ArcTutor.

  • ESRI Manuals: The ESRI Store sells hard-copy documentation manuals, GIS books, and geographic data. In addition, the Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktop workbook includes a 180-day trial version of ArcGIS 9.x on CD and a data CD for exercises.

For more about ESRI tutorials and training, see At IU, how can I get training in GIS and remote sensing?
