In Stata, how do I import observations spanning multiple lines?

The Stata .infix command allows you to specify line numbers followed by a colon ( : ). Suppose each observation has three data lines, as follows:

.infix 3 lines 1: byte id 1-10 2: str name 1-30 3: str state 1-2 float zipcode 4-8 using client.txt or .infix using client.dct where client.dct contains: ______________________________________ infix dictionary using client.txt { 3 lines 1: byte id 1-10 2: str name 1-30 3: str state 1-2 float zipcode 4-8 } ______________________________________

Stata reads id from columns 1 through 10 in the first line, name in the second line, and state and zipcode in the third line.

For more about statistical and mathematical software, email the UITS Stat/Math Center, visit the center's web page, or phone 812-855-4724 (IUB) or 317-278-4740 (IUPUI). The center is located in Bloomington at 410 N. Park Avenue, and is open for consultation by appointment Monday-Friday 9am-5pm.
