At IU, using ADS group policy, how do I configure multiple computers to use the IU Microsoft Update Service?

Note: The following information is intended for registered local support providers (LSPs) at Indiana University. If you are an LSP and have questions regarding the information in this document, contact LSP Services at  lsps@iu.edu ; otherwise, contact your campus Support Center.

To use ADS group policy to configure computers to use the IU Microsoft Update Service, first make sure you are using a version of the wuau.adm template dated May 26, 2005 or later. You can get this template at:

http://msupdate.iu.edu/selfupdate/au/x86/xp/en/wucltui.cab

For instructions to install the template, see:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457013.aspx

To create the group policy object (GPO):

  1. Open the Group Policy Management Console and navigate to your department organizational unit (OU).

  2. Right-click your OU, then select Create and Link a GPO Here.

  3. Name the GPO using the following format: campus code-department-group-name (e.g., bl-uits-lsps-uitswsus).

  4. Right-click the new GPO, then select Edit.

  5. Expand the selection by double-clicking Computer Configuration, then Administrative Templates, then Windows Components.

  6. Click Windows Update, then double-click Specify intranet Microsoft update service location.

  7. Click Enable, and in the boxes labeled "Set the intranet update service for detecting updates" and "Set the intranet statistics server", type http://msupdate.iu.edu .

  8. Click Apply, then OK.

Note: If the "Configure Automatic Updates" policy is disabled, then this setting will have no effect.
