To configure your computer to use the IU Microsoft Update Service, you must log into your computer as an administrator.

Note:
Security of Information Technology Resources (IT-12) requires that you normally refrain from running your Windows computer as an administrator. For more, see About the principle of least privilege.

Once you are logged in as an administrator, you can either download the client software from IUware or configure your computer's local group policy to connect to the IU Microsoft Update Service.

To install the IU Microsoft Update client from IUware:

  1. Download the installation file from IUware.

Note: You must log in before you can download software. If not already logged in, click Login, enter your Network ID username and passphrase, and then click Login. Once you're logged in, click Download.

  2. Save the file to your computer and run the installer.

  1. In Windows 7 and Vista, in the Start menu search field, enter gpedit.msc to launch the Group Policy Editor in Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

In Windows XP, from the Start menu, select Run.... Then, in the Run dialog box, enter gpedit.msc.

  2. Under "Computer Configuration", double-click Administrative Templates.
  3. Double-click Windows Components, and then click Windows Update.
  4. On the right side of the window, double-click Specify intranet Microsoft update service location.
  5. Select Enabled, and in both the text boxes, type http://msupdate.iu.edu. Click OK.
  6. To close gpedit.msc, from the File menu, select Exit.
