At IU, how do I configure my computer to use the IU Microsoft Update Service?
To configure your computer to use the IU Microsoft Update Service, you must log into your computer as an administrator.
Note: At Indiana University, the University Information Security Office (UISO) recommends that you normally refrain from running your Windows computer as an administrator. For more, see What is the principle of least privilege?
Once you are logged in as an administrator, you can either download the client software from IUware Online or configure your computer's local group policy to connect to the IU Microsoft Update Service.
Downloading the client from IUware Online
To download the IU Microsoft Update client from IUware Online:
- Go to IUware Online, and then
click
Security.
- Click
Indiana University Microsoft Update Client.
- You must log in before you can download software. If you're not
already logged in, click
Login, enter your Network ID username and passphrase, and then clickLogin. Once you're logged in, clickDownload.
- Save the file to your computer and run the installer.
Configuring the local group policy
To configure your computer's local group policy to connect to the IU Microsoft Update Service:
- From the
Startmenu, selectRun....
- In the
Rundialog box, entergpedit.mscto launch the Group Policy Editor in Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
- Under "Computer Configuration", double-click
Administrative Templates.
- Double-click
Windows Components, and then clickWindows Update.
- On the right side of the window, double-click
Specify intranet Microsoft update service location.
- Select
Enabled, and in both the text boxes, typehttp://msupdate.iu.edu. ClickOK.
- To close
gpedit.msc, from theFilemenu, selectExit.
- In XP, right-click
My Computer, chooseProperties, and then click theAutomatic Updatestab. In Vista, from theStartmenu, chooseControl Panel, and then openWindows Update. From the menu on the left, clickChange settings.
- Set Automatic Updates to keep your computer up to date, and exit
by clicking
OK.
