At IU, how do I configure my computer to use the IU Microsoft Update Service?

To configure a computer to use the IU Microsoft Update Service, you will need administrative access.

Note: At Indiana University, the University Information Security Office (UISO) recommends that you normally refrain from running your Windows computer as an administrator. For more, see What is the principle of least privilege?

There are two different methods you can use to configure your computer to use the service; you can either download the client software from IUware Online or you can configure your computer's local group policy to connect to the IU Microsoft Update Service. Choose the appropriate instructions below:

  • IUware Online:

    1. From IUware Online, click IU Utilities.
    2. Click IU Microsoft Update Service Installer.
    3. You must log in before you can download software. If you're not already logged in, click Login, enter your Network ID username and passphrase, and then click Login. Once you're logged in, click Download.
    4. Save the file to your computer and run the installer.

  • Local group policy:

    1. From the Start menu, select Run... .
    2. In the Run dialog box, enter gpedit.msc to launch the Group Policy Editor in Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
    3. Under "Computer Configuration", beside Administrative Templates, click + (the plus sign).
    4. Next to Windows Components, click + (the plus sign), and then click Windows Update.
    5. On the right side of the window, double-click Specify intranet Microsoft update service location.
    6. Select Enabled, and in both the text boxes, type http://msupdate.iu.edu . Click OK.
    7. To close gpedit.msc, from the File menu, select Exit.
    8. Right-click My Computer, choose Properties, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
    9. Set Automatic Updates to keep your computer up to date, and exit by clicking OK.
