ARCHIVED: In Windows XP or Vista, how do I change existing users to Restricted users?

On your Windows XP or Vista computer at Indiana University, UITS recommends that all computer accounts be members of the Users Group (i.e., Restricted users) except for one designated administrator account with which you can perform system tasks. To move an existing account to the Users Group, log into the computer as the administrator and follow the directions below for your situation and operating system:

In the IU ADS domain

Windows Vista

  1. From the Start menu, select Control Panel, and then double-click the User Accounts icon.

Note: If this doesn't match what you see, refer to About navigation settings in Windows.

  2. Under "Make changes to your user account", click Manage User Accounts.

  3. From the Users tab, click the name for the account that you want to move, and then click Properties.

  4. From the Group Membership tab, select Standard user. Alternatively, you can select Other: , and from the drop-down menu next to it, select Users.

Windows XP

  1. From the Start menu, select Control Panel, and then double-click the User Accounts icon.

  2. From the Users tab, under "Users for this computer:", click the name for the account that you want to move, and then click Properties.

  3. From the Group Membership tab, select Restricted user. Alternatively, you can select Other: , and from the drop-down menu next to it, select Users.
