At IU, how can I filter my incoming Cyrus mail?
Note: The spam quarantine service
analyzes all mail delivered to IU Cyrus/Webmail
and Exchange accounts. Any spam messages you receive are quarantined
for five days in a Spam (Cyrus/Webmail) or Junk
E-mail (Exchange) folder in your account. After five days, the

The Cyrus mail servers at Indiana University use a filtering language called Sieve, which you can use to augment the IU spam quarantine service. The web interface for building Sieves is called Ingo, and is accessible via IU Webmail. You can use Ingo to sort incoming mail and send it to different folders based on the sender or the subject line, for example.
Follow these steps to access Ingo and set up rules for filtering your email:
- Log into IU Webmail at: https://webmail.iu.edu/
- Click the
Filtersicon.
- Click the
New Rulebutton (below the "Existing Rules" list).
- Use the drop-down menus and checkboxes to set up your rule.
Click the lifesaver icons for help.
In the "Rule Name:" field, you can give the rule a unique name; this is useful if you plan to create more than one rule.
- When you're finished, click
Save.
- When you're finished creating rules, click
Inboxto return to your mail.
To edit or delete an existing rule, log into Ingo as described above. Under "Existing Rules", find the rule you would like to change. Click the pencil and paper icon to change the rule, or click the trashcan icon to delete it. You can also click the icon with two pieces of paper to copy the rule, so that you can use the copy as the basis for a new rule.
Rules are processed in the order they are listed on the main Filter Rules page, from top to bottom. If you have multiple rules, you can change the order of the rules by using the up and down arrows on the right.
You can temporarily disable a rule by clicking the green checkmark to turn it to a red X. Re-enable a rule by clicking the X.
