At IU, how do I configure Thunderbird to access the ADS Global Address List?

Note: The Indiana University ADS Global Address List (GAL) does not always work correctly with Mozilla Thunderbird. When you search for an address, results may take 20 minutes or longer to appear, or they might not appear at all. The GAL works more consistently with Outlook. To configure Thunderbird for Windows or Mac OS X to access the GAL:

1. In Thunderbird, from the Tools menu, select Address Book.
   
   
2. In the Address Book window, from the File menu, select New, and then select LDAP Directory... .
   
   
3. In the Directory Server Properties dialog box, next to "Name:", type a descriptive name (e.g., IU).
   
   
4. Next to "Hostname:", for IU Bloomington, type iu-mssg-adsdc04.ads.iu.edu . For any other campus location, type iu-mssg-adsdc01.ads.iu.edu .
   
   
5. Next to "Base DN:", type the following, with no spaces after the commas: dc=ads,dc=iu,dc=edu
6. Next to "Bind DN:", enter ads\username , replacing username with your IU Network ID username.
   
   
7. Check Use secure connection (SSL).
   
   
8. Next to "Port number:", enter 3269 , and then click OK.
   
   
9. In the Address Book window, under "Address Books", select the directory you just added.
   
   
10. In the search box, type all or part of an email address or name (first or last) for which you want to search, and then press Enter.
    
    
11. When you are prompted for your passphrase, enter your IU Network ID passphrase. If you don't want to enter your passphrase each time Thunderbird attempts to access the GAL, check Use Password Manager to remember this password.

GAL entries containing the text you entered in the search box will appear. To send email to someone listed in the directory, select the name, and then click Write near the top of the window.
