About IU's agreement with eInstruction Corporation

From 2005 to 2009, Indiana University had an agreement with eInstruction Corporation to facilitate the use of the eInstruction Classroom Performance System rf (CPSrf) on any IU campus. This agreement provided instructors with the ability to use a student response system in any of their courses, and did not require specific textbook adoption. Instructors could also choose to bundle clickers with textbook adoption.

In June 2009, IU entered into an agreement with Turning Technologies to support new student response system options, including integration with Oncourse CL and mobile devices. Instructors may use whatever products they choose in their classes, but Turning Technologies will be formally supported. The contract with eInstruction, which provided a reduced student enrollment/registration fee, expired on August 31, 2009. The eInstruction/CPS software will remain on the classroom computers during the 2009-2010 school year for instructors who wish to continue using eInstruction. For more information, see At IU, what options exist for student response devices? and About IU's agreement with Turning Technologies.

CPSrf consists of a radio frequency (RF) receiver connected to a computer (either Windows or Mac OS X), response pads (clickers) owned and registered by students, and a software package that allows an instructor to ask questions and gather responses from students. Typically, an instructor poses a question or problem to the class, students enter their answers using their clickers, and the answers are summarized and displayed on the computer screen (and, with a projector, to the entire class). For more information about CPSrf, visit the eInstruction web site and click Higher Education.

Students can purchase clickers from campus bookstores, and will also need to purchase an activation code, which will be valid for any courses for which the student registers during the term of the activation. The following options are currently available for activation codes:

  • $13 for one semester, with a $39 lifetime cap per student
  • $35 as a one-time payment

Note: These prices are for online purchases on the eInstruction site. Alternatively, you can purchase an activation code at your campus bookstore, but the price will include a slight markup.

If you are an instructor and would like more information about using student response systems in your classes, contact your campus teaching and learning center.
